Timothy Mellon made large contributions to committees aligned with Donald Trump and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in 2023 and 2024. TIME reported that Mellon gave Trump-supporting super PAC MAGA Inc. $50 million on May 31, 2024. But the available reports do not independently reconcile an exact $100 million combined total across both committees, so that figure should be treated as a reported aggregate—not a verified, same-cutoff accounting.
What the reported $100 million refers to
The headline figure describes money reported as going to political committees aligned with two 2024 presidential candidates. It does not mean Mellon gave $100 million directly to Trump and Kennedy, nor do the cited reports establish that the full amount went to the two committees in one transaction or reporting period.
TIME reported that Mellon contributed $50 million to MAGA Inc. on May 31, 2024, based on federal filings released in June. TIME’s report is the source for that dated amount: TIME’s June 21, 2024 report.
For American Values 2024, which supported Kennedy, the cited accounts describe contributions in different filing contexts: FactCheck.org reported $5 million through June 30, 2023, while the Associated Press reported $15 million in 2023. Those figures should not be silently added or treated as a reconciled final balance. The available sources do not establish an exact combined $100 million total at a single cutoff or after all possible amended filings.

| Committee | Candidate alignment and type | Mellon contribution reported | What the figure establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| MAGA Inc. | Trump-supporting independent-expenditure-only committee, commonly described as a super PAC | $50 million on May 31, 2024, according to TIME’s account of federal filings | An individual contribution to the committee, not a direct contribution to Trump’s candidate committee |
| American Values 2024 | Kennedy-supporting hybrid PAC | FactCheck.org: $5 million through June 30, 2023. AP: $15 million in 2023, according to federal filings. | Reports covering different dates or filing contexts; they do not by themselves provide a reconciled cycle-wide total |
TIME reported the MAGA Inc. transaction and date in its June 2024 article. The Federal Election Commission lists MAGA Inc. as an independent-expenditure-only committee and reports $201,076,226 in total committee receipts from January 1, 2023, through June 30, 2024. That is the committee’s aggregate receipts for the stated period—not Mellon’s personal giving: FEC PAC Table 12a.
Why a committee contribution is not necessarily a candidate donation
MAGA Inc. is an independent-expenditure-only committee. Its reported $50 million receipt was made to the committee, not to Trump’s candidate committee. Calling it a direct donation to Trump would blur a consequential distinction about the recipient and the type of political spending.
American Values 2024 is a hybrid PAC. FactCheck.org explains that it can raise unlimited money for independent expenditures while also operating a traditional PAC function that may contribute directly to candidates. The organization must maintain separate accounts for those functions. The cited reports identify contributions to American Values 2024, but the figures presented here do not specify which account received each Mellon contribution. See FactCheck.org’s explanation of American Values 2024.
What is known about American Values and ballot access?
In January 2024, the Democratic National Committee filed a Federal Election Commission complaint alleging that American Values 2024’s ballot-access signature collection created illegal coordination problems with Kennedy’s campaign under federal rules and some state requirements. DNC legal counsel Bob Lenhard argued, “They simply cannot comply with federal law and state law at the same time,” as quoted by the Associated Press.

American Values said it was operating independently to help Kennedy qualify for ballots and rejected the complaint as political games. The cited coverage reports competing claims; it does not establish an adjudicated finding that the PAC and campaign unlawfully coordinated. The Associated Press covered the complaint and responses in its January 2024 report.
A separate FEC matter, MUR #8251, records a 4–0 vote to dismiss specified allegations involving Trump committees and reporting issues. It concerned different allegations and respondents, so it does not resolve the DNC’s complaint about American Values or determine the total of Mellon’s contributions.

How to read the figures without conflating them
- $50 million: TIME’s report of Mellon’s May 31, 2024 contribution to MAGA Inc., based on federal filings.
- $5 million: FactCheck.org’s reported amount Mellon had contributed to American Values 2024 through June 30, 2023.
- $15 million: AP’s report that Mellon gave American Values $15 million in 2023, according to federal filings.
- $201,076,226: FEC-reported total receipts for MAGA Inc. from January 1, 2023, through June 30, 2024; it is not Mellon’s contribution total.
The $5 million and $15 million descriptions refer to different reporting contexts and should not be added as though they were separate, non-overlapping gifts. The sources cited here do not provide a transaction-by-transaction reconciliation of Mellon’s contributions to both committees through the end of the 2024 cycle or later amendments. TIME’s report also does not provide an on-record explanation from Mellon for his contributions.
