In 2016, Shaun Bridges was suspected of moving about 1,600 Bitcoin from a U.S. government wallet after an earlier Silk Road-related theft. That report described an allegation, not a proven second theft. In 2017, Bridges pleaded guilty to money laundering over the later Bitcoin transfer and received a separate 24-month sentence.
What the “another $700k” headline meant
The headline referred to Bitcoin moved from a government wallet in July 2015. The roughly $700,000 figure was a historical valuation, not the coins’ present-day value.
According to Ars Technica’s 2016 account of unsealed documents, 1,606 Bitcoin had been seized from Bitstamp accounts in November 2014 and placed in a wallet Bridges created. A court later ordered the return of $30,616 worth of Bitcoin to affected account owners after they disputed the warrant. The funds were then found missing.
At the time of that report, Bridges was described as suspected. He was the only person then conclusively known to have had access to the wallet, but that fact alone did not establish that he took the Bitcoin.

- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
How the suspected transfer became a guilty plea
In August 2017, the U.S. Department of Justice reported that Bridges had pleaded guilty to money laundering in connection with the later theft. DOJ said he admitted accessing a U.S. government digital wallet with a private key and transferring approximately 1,600 Bitcoin to other wallets and exchanges. The department valued the Bitcoin at approximately $359,005 at the time of the theft, and said Bridges agreed to turn it over. DOJ announcement of the plea
That admission resolves the central question in the 2016 story: the second theft was no longer merely an allegation. The amount of Bitcoin and its dollar value are separate measures; the dollar figure reflects the DOJ’s valuation at the time, not a current price.

Bridges’ two Silk Road-related schemes were separate
The later wallet theft was distinct from the earlier scheme that led to Bridges’ original conviction. DOJ said Bridges admitted using information obtained during the January 2013 search and arrest of Curtis Green to reset passwords and move approximately 20,000 Bitcoin from Silk Road accounts into a wallet he controlled. DOJ valued those coins at about $350,000 at the time. DOJ announcement of the earlier guilty plea
The cases involved different transfers and resulted in separate sentences. In 2015, Bridges was sentenced to 71 months for the earlier conviction. In November 2017, he received 24 months for money laundering in the later case, to run consecutively to the earlier term. DOJ also reported an order to forfeit approximately 1,500 Bitcoin and other currency. DOJ announcement of the 2017 sentence

Bridges was a federal agent involved in investigating Silk Road, and his admitted conduct involved misusing access and information gained through that work. When announcing the earlier guilty plea, Assistant Attorney General Leslie R. Caldwell said, “There is a bright line between enforcing the law and breaking it.” DOJ release with Caldwell’s statement
