The public record described in reporting supports that he made the statement and that the Office of Government Ethics issued a compliance certification dated December 5; it does not establish the sale’s exact closing date, buyer, price, or terms.
What Bessent said he divested
Bessent, the U.S. Treasury secretary, said: “I actually just divested it this week as part of my ethics agreement, so I’m out of that business.” The Associated Press transcribed the remark from his Face the Nation interview, and Reuters also reported his December 7 statement. AP’s account describes the asset as an interest in North Dakota soybean farmland; Reuters’ report connects it to the ethics agreement he signed in January 2025.
“Soybean farm” is shorthand. AP reported that the investment was made through a family partnership. The accounts describe a farmland investment or interest, not evidence that Bessent personally operated a farm.
Was the sale independently confirmed?
AP reported that an OGE compliance certification dated December 5, 2025, appeared on the agency’s website. The ethics agreement required Bessent to divest his share of the investment. AP said the certificate offered some explanation but little transaction detail. Its reporting therefore provides evidence of an agency certification, but does not disclose enough to establish the specific farm transaction’s terms.

- High Yield Bush Growth: midori giant edamame seeds form 24-36 inch nitrogen-fixing bushes, rewarding vegetable garden growers in USDA 3-9 with crunchy pods rich in complete protein.
- Fast Germination: soybean seeds for planting sprout in 5-10 days at 70-90 °F, letting home garden beginners harvest tender edamame in just 80 days while heirloom seeds thrive in loamy soil.
- Nutrient-Rich Snack: soy beans deliver sweet nutty flavor and buttery texture; boil or freeze for soy-protein snacks, soy bean seeds to plant are ideal for survival gardening fans seeking clean non gmo edamame.
- Easy Direct Sow: edamame seeds for planting outdoors need 1" depth and 12" spacing, no trellis required; bush habit suits containers or raised beds, making veggie seeds ideal for small spaces.
- Disease-Smart Cultivation: edamame seeds to plant resist common pests when grown in full sun and evenly moist soil; gardening kit growers mulch to conserve water and pick bright green pods before they yellow.
The available accounts do not identify a buyer, sale price, payment form, or exact closing date. Nor do they establish whether Bessent personally operated the land. Those details should not be inferred from his televised statement or from the reported existence of the certification.
Why the farmland interest drew scrutiny
The interest mattered because Bessent was involved in U.S. trade negotiations with China, a major buyer of U.S. soybeans. AP reported that his holdings raised questions in that context. The concern is about a potential conflict of interest: an official’s financial interests may overlap with matters affected by government policy. That overlap, by itself, does not prove that a particular decision was improperly influenced or that a law was violated.

Reuters reported that the Office of Government Ethics had notified the Senate Finance Committee on August 11, 2025, that Bessent had failed to comply with certain terms of his ethics agreement. That is Reuters’ account of OGE’s letter; it is distinct from a court finding. A July 2025 complaint by the Campaign Legal Center also alleged problems with compliance, but the filing represents the organization’s position, not an adjudicated conclusion.
What the ethics agreement required
The agreement set out assets Bessent committed to divest. A Campaign Legal Center complaint filed in July 2025 reproduces language from the agreement, which it says was signed January 9 and amended May 2. According to the complaint, Section 6 listed 28 holdings for divestment as soon as practicable and no later than 90 days after confirmation. Because the complaint is an advocacy filing, its account is useful for the agreement language it reproduces, while its claims about compliance should remain attributed to the organization. Read the complaint and reproduced agreement excerpts.

Reuters reported that many of the specified divestments were due by April 28, 2025, and that OGE later wrote to the Senate Finance Committee about noncompliance with certain terms. Bessent said in December that he had divested the farmland interest under the agreement. These are separate pieces of the timeline: the agreement and its deadlines describe the obligation; his interview describes what he said he did; and AP’s account describes the later compliance certification.
Timeline of the reported events
- January 9, 2025: The Campaign Legal Center complaint says Bessent signed the ethics agreement.
- April 28, 2025: Reuters reported this as the deadline for many specified divestments.
- May 2, 2025: The complaint says the agreement was amended.
- August 11, 2025: Reuters reported that OGE notified the Senate Finance Committee about Bessent’s noncompliance with certain terms.

How to read the claim, commitment, and record
| Evidence | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Bessent’s December 7 televised statement, reported by AP and Reuters | He publicly said he divested the North Dakota farmland interest that week under his ethics agreement. | The exact closing date, buyer, price, or other transaction terms. |
| Ethics-agreement language reproduced in the Campaign Legal Center complaint | The complaint says the agreement identified holdings for divestment, including 28 listed assets, with a deadline tied to confirmation. | That every alleged compliance failure was legally established; the complaint is an advocacy filing. |
| AP’s account of the OGE certification | AP reported that a December 5 compliance certification existed and provided limited detail. | On the account available here, the underlying transaction details or proof of a specific farm closing. |
Why the distinction matters
For readers asking whether Bessent sold his soybean farm, the precise answer is that he said he had divested his farmland interest, and AP reported a related OGE certification dated two days before his interview. The reporting does not make the buyer, price, or exact transfer date public. Keeping those points separate avoids treating a public statement, an ethics-agreement obligation, and a summary of an agency filing as interchangeable evidence.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- HEIRLOOM VARIETY & HIGH YIELD: Outsidepride soy bean seeds is a robust heirloom strain known for its high yield, producing over 3 bushels per acre more than the popular Manokin variety, making it a valuable choice for maximizing harvest output. This variety is perfect for outdoor gardening enthusiasts looking to optimize their yard space.
- RICH IN PROTEIN & OIL WITH VERSATILE USES: Containing about 18% oil and 38% protein, this soybean variety is perfect for producing high-quality soy bean oil and protein-rich meal. These soybeans can be processed into a wide range of products, including soy milk powder, soy flour, soy protein, tofu, and various industrial non-food products, showcasing its versatility. Ideal for making various soy-based meals such as edamame snacks.
- OPTIMAL PLANTING GUIDELINES FOR MAXIMUM YIELD: For best results, plant soybean seeds at a depth of 0.75 to 1.5 inches, with row spacing between 7.5 and 15 inches, depending on soil type and tillage. This ensures uniform seed placement and optimal growth, adapting well to midwestern states and capturing a significant percentage of non-GMO acres.
- HIGH-PROTEIN ANIMAL FEED: The high-protein fiber left after oil extraction is ideal for animal feed, particularly for poultry and swine industries, which consume over half of the processed soybean meal. This meal is also crucial for cattle, other farm animals, and pets, ensuring they receive the necessary nutrients for growth and development. A great addition to feed mixes for cowpeas and other legumes.
- ECONOMIC AND NUTRITIONAL: As the most economically important bean globally, soybeans provide essential vegetable protein for millions and are key ingredients in hundreds of chemical products. A 60-pound bushel of our soybeans seed yields about 11 pounds of crude soybean oil and 47 pounds of soybean meal. Beneficial for producing shelf-stable goods for long-term use.
