What happened in the Sattar Buksh dispute?
The claim that Pakistani café Sattar Buksh won a trademark case against Starbucks is misleading if it suggests a court ruled in Sattar Buksh’s favor. The Daily Star’s 7 October 2025 commentary says the dispute did not reach court. That does not establish that there were no private exchanges or other dealings; the available account does not verify trademark registry records or private correspondence.
The distinction matters because Starbucks did pursue a separate, documented case in Pakistan—but against Options International, not Sattar Buksh.
Which Starbucks case did reach Pakistan’s courts?
Starbucks complained to Pakistan’s Competition Commission (CCP) that Options International, a Lahore-based café and restaurant, was using Starbucks branding while selling coffee. The CCP described the complaint as alleging consumer deception and harm to Starbucks’ business interests. In its account of the enquiry, the Commission said Options acknowledged it was not an authorized Starbucks franchisee.

The CCP’s interim order summary, dated 17 August 2018, directed Options to stop using Starbucks marks and not imply an association or affiliation while proceedings continued. On 29 January 2019, the Commission issued its final order, imposing a PKR 5 million penalty and directing Options to publish notices to the public for three consecutive days.
How did the Options International case end?
- Competition Commission of Pakistan, 2019: imposed a PKR 5 million penalty and ordered public notices for three consecutive days.
- Competition Appellate Tribunal, 31 May 2024: dismissed Options International’s appeal and increased the penalty to PKR 6 million.
- Supreme Court, reported 12 August 2024: the CCP said the Court dismissed Options International’s appeal and upheld the PKR 6 million penalty. The Commission’s press-release summary says consumers could perceive the products as genuine Starbucks products, disadvantaging competing local vendors; this is the CCP’s account of the Court’s reasoning.
