Re:

Did Netflix Take Over the Comedy Central Roasts? What Changed

Netflix’s live Tom Brady roast looked like a handoff from Comedy Central, but the evidence points to a separate Netflix series, not a documented rights takeover.

Netflix brought a major celebrity roast to its platform, but the available evidence does not show that it bought or took over Comedy Central’s roast franchise. Netflix announced its own series in 2022, then staged and streamed The Greatest Roast of All Time: Tom Brady as a live event in 2024. That made Netflix a conspicuous new home for a roast; it did not establish a formal handoff.

Comedy Central had an established roast franchise

Comedy Central’s March 2011 announcement called its Donald Trump event part of the “COMEDY CENTRAL Roast franchise.” The release also named executive producer Joel Gallen, who had worked on that roast and several earlier ones, and said the franchise was returning to New York for the first time since 2005. That confirms the network’s franchise language and history at that point, but it is not a complete account of every installment or the franchise’s eventual end. Comedy Central’s 2011 announcement

Netflix announced a separate roast series in 2022

On May 17, 2022, Netflix announced Greatest Roasts of All Time: GROAT as “the first in a series of new Netflix specials.” Tom Brady was named as the first person to be roasted and as an executive producer under a multi-roast deal. Netflix’s announcement presented GROAT as its own project; it did not announce an acquisition of Comedy Central’s franchise or rights. Netflix’s 2022 announcement

The announcement also made the intended tone clear. Netflix Vice President of Stand-up and Comedy Formats Robbie Praw joked: “We can’t wait to burn three-time Super Bowl-losing quarterback Tom Brady, who only went back to the NFL in order to delay this roast,”

Netflix made the Brady roast a live festival event

The Greatest Roast of All Time: Tom Brady was part of Netflix Is a Joke Fest, held in Los Angeles from May 2 to 12, 2024. Netflix said the festival was produced with Live Nation and included more than 300 live shows, events, table reads, and sketches across more than 35 venues; the Brady roast was listed at The Forum. Netflix reported that the roast first aired live on May 5. The Associated Press described a roughly three-hour event featuring comedians as well as Brady’s former teammates and opponents. Before the event, Brady said: “This is what a locker room has been like for me for all these years. So it’s not like I’m used to people not making fun of me.” Associated Press event report

Netflix’s viewership figures use different reporting contexts

Netflix published two audience figures for the Brady roast. They are separate reports and should not be treated as the same measurement or as a direct comparison with Comedy Central’s audience.

Figure What Netflix reported Context
13.8 million views Netflix placed the roast at No. 1 on its English TV list. Views for the week of May 6, 2024, in Netflix’s May 14 Top 10 post. Netflix Top 10
22.6 million views Netflix cited the roast as an example of the “power of eventized programming.” Figure in Netflix’s Q2 2024 shareholder letter; it is not the same weekly report as the Top 10 figure. The strategic characterization is Netflix’s own framing. Netflix quarterly earnings and shareholder letters

Neither figure is identified here as live viewers, and neither establishes that the Netflix event outdrew a Comedy Central roast. The sources do not provide a directly comparable Comedy Central audience figure.

Why it looked like a takeover—and what remains unknown

The visible shift is easier to explain than any formal change in ownership. Netflix announced a new roast series, gave Brady a producing role, and made his roast a live centerpiece of a large comedy festival. Its later shareholder letter highlighted the event as an example of eventized programming. Together, those moves show Netflix’s public investment in live, attention-grabbing comedy; they do not prove that Netflix set out to replace Comedy Central.
