Did Netflix Make a Mistake by Releasing ‘Happy Gilmore 2’ on Streaming?

A theatrical window might have turned Happy Gilmore 2 into a shared event, but Netflix’s streaming reach is real—and the evidence does not prove the choice cost it money.

Netflix’s decision to launch Happy Gilmore 2 on its streaming service instead of giving it a meaningful theatrical run may have left a valuable shared moviegoing event on the table. That is a reasonable fan and exhibition argument—not proof that Netflix lost money. Netflix reported 46.7 million global opening-weekend views, but that streaming figure cannot tell us how the film might have performed in cinemas or whether the release strategy helped Netflix financially.

What was Netflix’s release decision?

Netflix announced Happy Gilmore 2 for July 25, 2025, on its service; the Associated Press also listed that date in its July 18 release preview. Netflix’s later Tudum coverage described the film as streaming on Netflix. The available announcements establish a streaming launch, but do not provide a comprehensive account of special screenings or releases in every territory.

The sequel brings Adam Sandler back with familiar cast members including Julie Bowen, Ben Stiller and Christopher McDonald, alongside new cast members and real golf figures. Kyle Newacheck directed, and original co-writer Tim Herlihy returned. Netflix director Newacheck said, “There’s been a wave of golf [popularity], so it feels like the movie is timely, just like it did in ’96.”

Why a theatrical run could have made sense

The case for cinemas is about more than ticket revenue. The 1996 original is widely recognizable, and a sequel arriving nearly three decades later could have been an occasion for fans to see it together. A limited theatrical window before streaming might have created an opening-night event and captured some demand from viewers who value the communal experience.

That was the argument made before release by CinemaBlend writer Philip Sledge, who noted that Netflix has given some titles limited theatrical runs and asked why it would not do the same for Happy Gilmore 2. His was an opinion piece, not evidence of audience consensus, projected ticket sales or a quantified missed opportunity. It makes a plausible case for an alternative strategy, but does not demonstrate that Netflix’s choice was a mistake in financial terms.

What Netflix’s streaming numbers do—and do not—show

Netflix reported 46.7 million global views for the film in its opening weekend. The company described that as the biggest US opening weekend for a Netflix film and the largest opening for any Adam Sandler film. Those are Netflix’s characterizations of its streaming performance; views are not the same as unique people, ticket buyers, revenue, profit or proof of subscriber growth.

The figure shows substantial reach on Netflix, but it cannot settle the theatrical question. To compare the strategies fairly, an analyst would need evidence on box-office receipts and distributor economics, the length and geography of any theatrical window, streaming audience and subscriber effects, marketing and event value, and later licensing or merchandise. The cited announcements do not provide a counterfactual estimate of what a cinema release would have earned.

Netflix also tied the film to marketing and local production

Netflix announced promotional partnerships with Subway, U.S. Bank and Callaway in June 2025. Subway’s US campaign included a Happy Gilmore Meal and limited-edition character cups beginning July 10, while supplies lasted. U.S. Bank sponsored the film’s Champions Tour premiere and ran custom TV spots on Netflix’s ad-supported plan. Callaway announced limited-edition golf balls and an Odyssey Hockey Stick Putter. These details document coordinated promotion and merchandise, not campaign returns or current product availability.

Netflix also reported that production used 45 locations across New Jersey and involved more than 400 local crew members, nearly 3,000 extras from New Jersey and more than 400 local vendors. These are company-reported production counts. They indicate a substantial reported local footprint, but are not an independent assessment of net economic impact.

So could the streaming choice hurt Netflix?

It could have foregone some theatrical revenue and the cultural momentum of a cinema event, but the available evidence does not establish that it actually harmed Netflix. The 46.7 million opening-weekend views show strong reported streaming reach; they do not reveal profitability or what a theatrical-first release would have added. The most defensible criticism is narrower: Netflix may have passed up a plausible opportunity to make a familiar comedy sequel a shared theatrical occasion, and the public figures cited here are not enough to determine whether that trade-off was financially wise.
