No—not as a merger partner. Mitsubishi Motors explored possible involvement in Nissan and Honda’s proposed business integration in December 2024, but the three companies terminated that exploratory memorandum of understanding on February 13, 2025. They said their broader strategic partnership would continue.
What Mitsubishi agreed to in December 2024
On December 23, 2024, Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan and Honda signed a memorandum of understanding to explore whether Mitsubishi might participate in or otherwise be involved with Nissan and Honda’s proposed integration, including sharing potential synergies. The proposal under consideration involved Nissan and Honda forming a joint holding company. Why Mitsubishi initially pushed back on reports
On December 18, 2024, Mitsubishi said reports that Honda and Nissan were considering integration with the possibility of Mitsubishi joining later were not based on an announcement from the company. It said the companies were considering possible collaboration and that no decisions had been made. The integration MOU ended; the partnership continued
On February 13, 2025, Nissan and Honda ended their own integration MOU. In light of that decision, all three companies terminated the December tripartite MOU. Their joint announcement said they would continue collaborating under the strategic partnership framework signed on August 1, 2024, focused on vehicle intelligence and electrification. How later collaboration differs from a merger
Nissan and Honda’s software agreement
On August 31, 2026, Honda announced a Nissan–Honda agreement to jointly develop and standardize core electronic control units (ECUs) and software for next-generation software-defined vehicles. The companies plan to use the resulting electrical and electronic architecture in next-generation vehicles from fiscal 2029 onward. The announcement names Nissan and Honda as the parties; it does not say Mitsubishi joined this project or that a merger is underway. Honda’s August 31, 2026 announcement
Nissan and Mitsubishi’s vehicle cooperation
Nissan’s partnership overview describes work with Honda and Mitsubishi Motors in vehicle intelligence and electrification, as well as separate Nissan–Mitsubishi electric-vehicle and pickup projects. Separately, Mitsubishi said in June 2026 that its North American companies planned to begin selling a Nissan-supplied Eclipse Sportback EV in the second half of 2026. These are examples of strategic cooperation and vehicle supply—not evidence that Mitsubishi joined the Honda–Nissan integration proposal.
