Did Mike Ashley Lose the Bid to Buy Sheffield Wednesday? What Happened Next

Mike Ashley was not the successful buyer of Sheffield Wednesday. Administrators selected Arise Capital Partners after an earlier preferred bidder withdrew, and the EFL confirmed the asset transfer in May 2026.

Mike Ashley did not buy Sheffield Wednesday. Although ITV reported on 19 December 2025 that he was believed to be the only bidder still in contention, administrators named James Bord’s consortium as preferred bidder five days later. After that group withdrew, Arise Capital Partners LLC was selected and completed the club’s asset transfer on 2 May 2026.

Why reports about Ashley’s status changed

The apparent contradiction comes from two reports published at different points in a fast-moving sale process. On 19 December 2025, ITV News Calendar reported that Ashley was believed to be the only bidder remaining. ITV also reported that his offer was believed to be below Sheffield Wednesday’s £30 million debt obligations; that was contemporary reporting, not an official final bid figure or valuation. ITV News Calendar, 19 December 2025

On 24 December, the BBC reported that administrators had chosen James Bord’s consortium as preferred bidder. Ashley and American bidder David Storch were among the other interested parties named. The BBC said the selected offer to creditors exceeded EFL minimum requirements. BBC, 24 December 2025

So Ashley’s reported position on 19 December was not the final outcome: the administrators announced a different preferred bidder five days later. The available reporting does not establish a complete official comparison of every bidder’s final offer, or the exact margin by which Ashley may have lost.

What happened after Bord was selected

Bord’s consortium withdrew

Being named preferred bidder did not complete a sale. On 25 February 2026, the Bord-led consortium withdrew, leaving administrators to seek another buyer. BBC, 25 February 2026

Arise became the preferred bidder

On 10 March 2026, administrators announced Arise Capital Partners LLC as the new preferred bidder. The consortium comprised David Storch, Michael Storch and Tom Costin. Administrators described its proposal as the strongest in the renewed process, while saying it was below the amount needed to pay creditors 25p in the pound. That creditor-return figure is not the price Arise paid for the club. Sheffield Wednesday administrators, 10 March 2026

The asset transfer was completed

On 2 May 2026, the EFL confirmed that administrators had concluded an agreement with Arise for the transfer of the club’s assets. The EFL also confirmed Sheffield Wednesday was no longer regarded as being in administration. It described the process as “an incredibly challenging and complex situation for all parties”. Bidder, preferred bidder and buyer are different things

  • Bidder: A party seeking to buy the club. Ashley was among the interested parties.
  • Preferred bidder: The party administrators select to pursue a proposed transaction. Bord’s group held that status in December, but later withdrew.
  • Completed buyer: The party whose transaction reaches completion. The EFL confirmed the asset transfer to Arise on 2 May 2026.

That distinction is why the December preferred-bidder announcement did not settle the ownership question. The later withdrawal and completed transfer determined the outcome.

Who bought Sheffield Wednesday, and was Ashley outbid?

Arise Capital Partners LLC completed the asset transfer; Mike Ashley did not buy the club. Calling the result an “outbid” is a useful shorthand for Ashley’s unsuccessful pursuit, but the public information cited here does not provide a final, bidder-by-bidder price ledger proving precisely how the competing offers compared. The £30 million figure was ITV’s report of Sheffield Wednesday’s debt obligations, and the 25p-in-the-pound figure was administrators’ description of the creditor return Arise’s offer fell short of funding. Neither figure establishes Ashley’s final bid or the sale price.
