The claim that MARA transferred $81.1 million in bitcoin to Galaxy Digital is not confirmed by the company filings reviewed. Those filings do document substantial bitcoin sales and a shift of resources toward artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC), but they do not identify an $81.1 million Galaxy transaction or establish whether any such movement was a sale, loan, collateral transfer, or custody change.

What is known about the alleged Galaxy Digital transfer?

MARA’s reviewed filings do not confirm a $81.1 million transfer to Galaxy Digital. They do not provide a transaction date, bitcoin quantity, wallet, valuation basis, named recipient, or purpose matching that claim. The amount should therefore be treated as an unverified headline claim, not an established company transaction.

MARA’s filing index lists its August 6, 2026 second-quarter Form 10-Q as its latest quarterly or annual report shown, and a September 25, 2026 Form 8-K as its latest current report shown on the index reviewed. Neither establishes the alleged transfer. A primary transaction record or a company disclosure identifying the transaction would be needed to verify it. MARA SEC filing index

What MARA reported about its bitcoin

MARA’s second-quarter 2026 Form 10-Q reports several different types of bitcoin activity. These categories should not be conflated: holdings, lending, collateral and sales describe different positions or transactions.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Activity Reported amount and date What it means
Bitcoin on balance sheet 35,577 BTC as of June 30, 2026, including 9,270 BTC under its digital asset management strategy A reported balance at that date; not evidence of a transfer to Galaxy.
Bitcoin loaned 4,742 BTC as of June 30, 2026 Bitcoin reported as loaned to third parties; the filing figure does not identify Galaxy as the recipient.
Bitcoin pledged as collateral 4,528 BTC as of June 30, 2026 Collateral is distinct from a sale or a confirmed transfer to a named counterparty.
Bitcoin sold Approximately 23,093 BTC for $1.6 billion in proceeds during the six months ended June 30, 2026 Reported sales over a six-month period, not a single identified Galaxy transaction.

These figures are from MARA’s 2026 second-quarter Form 10-Q. They describe the company’s reported positions and sales; they do not resolve the $81.1 million claim.

Why is MARA selling bitcoin and shifting toward AI and HPC?

MARA said it began a restructuring plan during the six months ended June 30, 2026, to reallocate resources toward AI initiatives and related critical IT and HPC opportunities. Its filing also cites a significant decline in bitcoin prices as part of the context. The company describes bitcoin as both a long-term asset and a source of liquidity, and says it sells bitcoin produced through mining on an ongoing basis. It may sell additional holdings depending on market conditions and capital allocation priorities. MARA’s second-quarter 2026 Form 10-Q

The broader strategy is not a claim that bitcoin mining has ended. In its 2025 Form 10-K, MARA describes its business as energy and digital infrastructure, with bitcoin mining remaining a foundation as it develops AI inference and HPC capabilities. The filing says MARA expanded its digital asset management strategy in 2026 to permit sales of balance-sheet bitcoin in addition to current production.

How do the 2025 and 2026 bitcoin figures compare?

The dates matter: year-end 2025 and June 2026 are separate snapshots, not interchangeable measures of a current balance.

What the filings do—and do not—establish

  • Established: MARA reported bitcoin sales, bitcoin loaned to third parties, bitcoin pledged as collateral, and a plan to allocate resources toward AI and HPC.
  • Not established: That MARA transferred $81.1 million in bitcoin to Galaxy Digital, or the date, quantity, valuation, mechanism, or purpose of such a transaction.
  • Important distinction: A loan or collateral position is not the same as a sale, and none of the cited figures names Galaxy as a recipient.
