Did Lady Gaga Spend Millions on Michael Jackson’s Wardrobe? What the 2012 Auction Reported

Lady Gaga bought 55 pieces from Michael Jackson’s former wardrobe at a 2012 Julien’s Auctions sale. But the reported figure of more than $5 million was the gross for the entire auction—not a confirmed amount Gaga paid. The prices she paid for her individual lots were not disclosed in the coverage.

Which star’s wardrobe did Lady Gaga buy?

The star was Michael Jackson. British Vogue reported on December 4, 2012, that Gaga acquired 55 pieces from his former wardrobe at a Julien’s Auctions sale. British Vogue’s report described the purchase and quoted Gaga’s post about the collection.

Did Lady Gaga personally spend millions?

That is not established by the reporting. The more-than-$5-million figure refers to the total proceeds of the auction, not Gaga’s personal bill. Forbes also reported that the sale grossed over $5 million, while noting that bidding details were confidential. Forbes’ auction coverage does not identify Gaga’s spending total.

Some individual auction results were reported: a jacket Jackson wore during the Bad tour sold for $240,000, and a crystal glove sold for more than $100,000, according to Forbes. Those were auction results; the reporting does not identify either item as one of Gaga’s 55 purchases.

Which pieces did Gaga acquire?

The reviewed coverage does not publicly identify the exact lots she bought. It is therefore not possible to say that she acquired the Bad tour jacket, the crystal glove, or any other specific item mentioned in reports about the auction.

Gaga said she intended to preserve the pieces: “The 55 pieces I collected today will be archived & expertly cared for in the spirit & love of Michael Jackson, his bravery, & fans worldwide.” This is her reported intention; the coverage does not independently verify where the items were later stored or their subsequent condition.

Was the Alexander McQueen gown part of the same purchase?

No. Gaga’s reported purchase of an Alexander McQueen gown from Daphne Guinness’s collection was a separate Christie’s auction earlier in 2012. The Los Angeles Times reported that she paid $133,075 for the gown. The Los Angeles Times report concerns that distinct sale, not Jackson’s wardrobe auction.
