That denial addresses the specific rumor; it does not establish that Reeves never donated to charity, or provide a full account of his earnings or giving.
What was claimed—and what was denied
A now-deleted report claimed that Reeves gave 70% of his earnings from the original The Matrix to cancer research. In a January 12, 2022 report, The Independent said Reeves’s publicist had debunked the claim in a statement to Newsweek and separately confirmed to The Independent that it was untrue.
The publicist’s reported statement was: “The story is not true, Keanu Reeves did not donate 70 per cent of his salary to charity”. This is the publicist’s denial as quoted by The Independent—not a statement from Reeves himself.
Is the often-cited $31.5 million donation verified?
No. The approximately $31.5 million figure has circulated alongside the 70% story, but it is not established as an actual donation amount. Zoom TV, in an article updated October 6, 2026, likewise describes the figure as unsupported and notes the publicist’s 2022 denial. The reviewed coverage provides no verified donation amount or complete accounting of Reeves’s Matrix earnings and charitable giving.

What is known about Reeves’s charitable activity?
The denial of this particular salary claim does not mean Reeves never gave to charity. The Independent reported that, in a 2009 Ladies Home Journal interview, Reeves said he had a private foundation that helped “a couple of children’s hospitals and cancer research.” It also quoted him saying, “I don’t like to attach my name to it.” That reported charitable activity is context, not evidence that he donated 70% of his Matrix salary.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where did the rumor come from?
The Independent said the rumor took flight shortly after The Matrix Resurrections opened on December 22, 2021, following a now-deleted report. The precise original publisher of that report is not identified in the reviewed coverage, so its first source cannot be stated with confidence.
The claim that Reeves gave 70% of his original Matrix salary to charity was denied by his publicist. The circulated $31.5 million figure is not verified, and the denial should not be expanded into a claim that Reeves made no charitable donations.
