No confirmed purchase is established by the available reporting. In April 2024, Italian news outlets said Johnny Depp had reportedly looked at Montalto Dora Castle in northern Italy while he was in Turin, and Corriere della Sera put its reported asking price at €4.8 million. A source close to Depp told Fox Business that “nothing is confirmed or official”; Depp’s representatives declined to comment.
What happened—and what was not confirmed
The story began in April 2024, when Corriere della Sera reported that Depp had apparently visited the Montalto Dora area during his stay in Turin for a film about artist Amedeo Modigliani. The paper described possible interest in the castle as a rumor, not a completed purchase or confirmed offer. Corriere della Sera reported an asking price of €4.8 million.
Fox Business later reported that a source close to Depp said “nothing is confirmed or official.” That was the source’s description of the potential sale, not a statement from Depp. His representatives declined to comment. The reporting therefore supports saying Depp was rumored to be interested in the property; it does not establish that he bought it. Fox Business
Where is Montalto Dora Castle, and what was it like?
The castle is in the Canavese area of Piedmont, in northern Italy. Corriere described it as a hilltop property on Monte Crovero overlooking the Parco dei Cinque Laghi di Ivrea. Its report listed more than 2,000 square meters, 11 rooms, 13 bathrooms, and a 15th-century chapel. Those are reported property details, not evidence of a sale or appraisal.

Why the mayor raised the question of community use
The local discussion was not only about whether a celebrity might buy the building. In a Corriere follow-up published April 15, 2024, Montalto Dora Mayor Renzo Galletto argued for uses that could serve the public, including exhibitions, conferences, and cultural initiatives. The reporting described prior use as a film and television location, occasional events, and private event rentals.

Fox Business reported that Galletto characterized the castle as protected under Italian cultural heritage rules and said planning changes would require approvals. That is an attributed description of the constraints, not a detailed statement of the property’s legal status. The mayor cautioned that celebrity ownership could bring attention but might not produce the right “economic synergy” for the community. Fox Business

“Comeback” is an interpretation, not a measurable outcome established by the castle report. Career developments reported later provide context, but they do not change what is known about the property transaction.
