Jeremy Renner was unable to work for more than a year after his 2023 snow-groomer accident, according to CBS News. That establishes a major interruption to his career, but not how much money he lost: the available reporting does not quantify lost earnings, medical costs, insurance payments, or any change in his net worth.
What happened to Jeremy Renner?
On New Year’s Day 2023, Renner was run over by his own seven-ton Pistenbully snow groomer while trying to free a relative’s vehicle on a private road near Lake Tahoe, Nevada. The Associated Press reported that he suffered critical injuries, including major chest trauma; authorities said there were no signs of impairment or foul play. He was later discharged from hospital and reported that he was recovering at home. Associated Press
Renner said in January 2023 that he had broken more than 30 bones. CBS News described the toll as 38 broken bones and multiple surgeries in May 2024. Those are reports from different points in time, so the early figure should not be treated as a competing count. Associated Press; CBS News
In a 2025 interview, The Guardian recounted injuries Renner had documented, including multiple rib and pelvic breaks, fractures in both ankles, a broken tibia and wrist, facial fractures, a collapsed lung, and a pierced liver. The Guardian

How long was Renner away from work?
CBS News reported in May 2024 that Renner had been unable to work for over a year before returning to Mayor of Kingstown. He said acting again helped him cope, while describing the earliest part of recovery as fragile and touch-and-go. CBS News
His comments in other interviews show why a return to work should not be mistaken for a precise medical endpoint:
Rank #2
- January 2023: After leaving hospital, Renner referred to “brain fog in recovery” in a post reported by the Associated Press. Associated Press
- January 2024: He described recovery as “a one-way road” and said he had a lot to fight for. The Guardian
- February 2024: Renner said he was doing “probably 90 percent” of the things he needed to do. That was his approximate description of his progress, not a clinical measurement. Entertainment Tonight
- July 2025: He reflected that the prior year had focused on walking, and described continued work to walk and breathe normally and trust his body. The Guardian
What is known about the financial impact?
The reporting establishes that Renner missed more than a year of work; it does not establish the dollar value of that interruption. The sources cited here provide no verified estimate of his lost salary, reduced future offers, medical bills, insurance coverage, or net financial impact. They therefore do not support a claim that the accident cost him a specific amount—or that it depleted his fortune. CBS News
Even a lengthy absence from work does not reveal what someone ultimately lost financially. The result could depend on compensation arrangements, insurance, medical coverage, and other private details. Without verified figures for those factors, any estimate would be speculation rather than a calculation grounded in reporting.

What readers can reasonably conclude
- Renner sustained severe injuries in the accident and described breaking more than 30 bones; CBS later reported 38.
- He was unable to work for over a year, then returned to Mayor of Kingstown.
- His interviews through July 2025 describe continuing recovery, rather than a clearly dated end point.
- The available reporting does not show how much the accident cost him financially.
Renner’s memoir, My Next Breath, discusses the accident and recovery, as noted by The Guardian. It offers a personal account, not a verified estimate of financial losses. The Guardian
