The £13,715-per-second figure is a reported calculation comparing Jean-Kévin Augustin’s limited Leeds United playing time with costs attributed to the transfer saga. It is not a figure set by a court, and the public record does not establish Leeds’ final payment to RB Leipzig. The saga involved two separate disputes: a conditional transfer-fee obligation confirmed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), and a later compensation case brought by Augustin.
Where the £13,715-per-second figure comes from
Augustin made three substitute appearances for Leeds and played 48 minutes, according to BBC Sport’s November 2022 report. In 2024 coverage, the £13,715-per-second figure was attributed to football finance academic Kieran Maguire as a way of expressing the saga’s reported cost against that playing time.

That figure is a media calculation, not a CAS finding or an audited final transfer cost. The underlying reporting does not establish a single final amount paid by Leeds that can be definitively divided by Augustin’s playing time. In particular, the transfer-fee dispute with Leipzig and the separate compensation case brought by Augustin should not be treated as one confirmed bill.
Why Leeds had a purchase obligation
On 25 January 2020, RB Leipzig, Leeds and Augustin agreed to a loan through 30 June 2020. The contract required Leeds to buy Augustin permanently for €21 million in three instalments if the club were promoted to the Premier League at the end of the 2019–20 English Football League season, according to CAS’s official 4 November 2022 release.

The season was suspended on 13 March 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic and concluded later than originally expected. Leeds and Leipzig disagreed over whether promotion at the delayed end of the season triggered the purchase clause.
What CAS decided—and what the clubs later settled
FIFA’s Players’ Status Committee had upheld Leipzig’s claim and ordered Leeds to pay the first instalment. Leeds appealed to CAS in August 2021. After a hearing on 15 March 2022, the CAS panel dismissed the appeal, concluding that the promotion condition had been triggered despite the season’s delay. CAS confirmed the FIFA decision in full.

The first instalment specified in the CAS release was €6,740,174: €7 million less a €259,826 solidarity contribution. The other two instalments were not yet due at the time of the FIFA procedure. Leeds said it was “surprised and disappointed” by the decision and would review its legal options; that was the club’s response, not CAS’s conclusion. Leeds’ statement is available at the club’s 4 November 2022 announcement.
On 5 December 2022, Leeds and Leipzig announced that they had reached an amicable resolution, with further details confidential to the parties. Their announcement does not disclose the final settlement amount, so the publicly stated €21 million contractual fee and €6,740,174 first instalment should not be presented as proof of the final amount Leeds paid. The clubs’ announcement is at Leeds United’s website.

Augustin’s separate compensation case
The dispute with Leipzig over the purchase obligation was not the same case as Augustin’s claim against Leeds following the aborted permanent move. In 2024 coverage, a FIFA compensation award of £24.5 million was reported, and Leeds’ withdrawal of its appeal against that award was also reported. The reporting does not establish that Leeds paid the entire award or disclose a final settlement. See MOT Leeds News’ 11 April 2024 report.

How to read the headline figure
- It is shorthand, not a court-set rate. CAS ruled on the contractual obligation and first instalment, not a cost per second.
- It depends on what costs are counted. The Leipzig transfer-fee dispute and Augustin’s compensation case had different parties and legal bases; public reporting does not establish a final combined cost.
- The playing-time denominator is reported. BBC Sport stated 48 minutes across three substitute appearances; the per-second comparison is a later attributed calculation.
