Hurricane Helene caused a real, temporary shutdown of high-purity-quartz operations in Spruce Pine, North Carolina, in September 2024. But the available evidence does not establish that the storm caused a measurable drop in chip production or higher chip prices. The event exposed a concentrated supply-chain vulnerability; it did not, on the evidence reviewed, confirm an industry-wide semiconductor shock.
Why does a North Carolina quartz town matter to chipmaking?
Spruce Pine supplies high-purity quartz, an upstream material used to make fused-quartz crucibles. Those crucibles hold silicon feedstock at the extreme temperatures required to grow monocrystalline silicon. The silicon is formed into ingots and sliced into wafers, which are substrates for semiconductor manufacturing.
Quartz is not a chip, and the Helene-related shutdown did not directly close semiconductor fabrication plants. Its significance was that a material used earlier in the production chain comes from a highly concentrated source.
Two concentration estimates describe different things
Everstream Analytics estimates that Spruce Pine accounts for approximately 80–90% of global high-purity-quartz supply. Separately, the Associated Press reported author Vince Beiser’s estimate that 70–90% of crucibles used worldwide to melt polysilicon are made with Spruce Pine quartz. The first estimate concerns quartz supply; the second concerns crucibles. They are not interchangeable measures of the share of chips or semiconductor materials produced there.

What happened to the Spruce Pine operations?
Flooding and damage to surrounding infrastructure interrupted both operators’ work. The shutdown was temporary, but the restart dates differed:

These reports document restarts, not a verified date when both operators had returned to full capacity. The storm also disrupted power, communications, roads and rail links, so restoring mine production and moving material depended on infrastructure as well as the facilities themselves.

Did Helene cause a chip shortage or raise chip prices?
The cited sources do not quantify a Helene-caused loss of chips, a decline in semiconductor output, or an increase in chip prices. A mine shutdown alone cannot establish those downstream effects.
At the time, Everstream said existing stocks of quartz and silicon were expected to meet chipmakers’ short-term demand. The Quartz Corp, in statements relayed by AVEVA on October 8, said its feedstock and safety stocks led it not to anticipate a critical short- or medium-term downstream situation. These were company and analyst assessments of the expected buffer, not measurements of every customer’s deliveries or proof that every downstream business was unaffected.

For consumers, the practical distinction is between a credible supply-chain risk and a demonstrated market effect. The available evidence supports the former, but not a Helene-linked change in semiconductor availability or prices that would justify a specific purchasing decision.

Helene revealed how an interruption at a specialized upstream source can draw attention across a much larger industry, even when inventories and restart activity may limit near-term consequences. The concentration figures help explain why buyers and manufacturers monitor the source; inventory buffers help explain why a shutdown does not automatically translate into a shortage.

TECHCET president and CEO Lita Shon-Roy described the sourcing problem this way in an NPR statement quoted by AVEVA in October 2024: “Every time I’ve asked in the last two decades, the question always comes back, ‘Well, where else are we supposed to get it?’” The remark captures the challenge of substituting a specialized material source, but it is not evidence that a Helene-related shortage reached chipmakers.
The wider regional damage also matters as recovery context, not as a measure of semiconductor losses. North Carolina’s Department of Public Safety said in a September 2026 retrospective that Helene caused nearly $60 billion in statewide damage, damaged or destroyed more than 73,000 homes, and left approximately 9,000 damaged road sites. Those figures describe North Carolina’s recovery burden; they do not measure losses to chip production.
