Honda did not confirm that reported shift in its quoted response.
What did Trump say about Honda and Indiana?
In his March 2025 address to Congress, President Donald Trump said: “In Indiana, the great State of Indiana—I love Indiana—Honda is building one of the biggest plants anywhere, and they’ve just started. They wouldn’t have done it without this.” The official transcript confirms the words; it does not establish that Honda had announced or begun construction of a new facility.
The remarks came during a discussion of tariffs and manufacturing in the United States. The distinction is important: a statement about a new plant is not the same as a change in production plans at a factory that already exists.
How did Honda respond?
The Indianapolis Business Journal reported that a Honda spokesperson said the company had made no announcement of plans for a new U.S. plant “at this time.” The same March 2025 report attributed two investment figures to Honda: more than $3 billion in advanced vehicle manufacturing investment in America over the preceding three years, and more than $24.7 billion cumulatively. Those are figures quoted at the time, not current totals.

In a statement reproduced by SEMA in response to reports about Civic production, Honda said: “Honda has made no such announcement and will not comment on this report. The Honda Civic has been made in our Indiana Auto Plant since the facility opened in 2008 based on our longstanding approach to build products close to the customer. We have the flexibility to produce products in each region based on customer needs and market conditions.”
What Honda plant already operates in Indiana?
Honda’s Indiana Auto Plant page identifies its facility in Greensburg and says Civic sedan production began there in 2008. The page lists Civic Hatchback, Civic Hatchback Hybrid, CR-V and CR-V Hybrid production. Its published quick facts describe an existing operation: 2.5 million square feet, more than 2,600 associates, annual capacity of 250,000 vehicles and $1.3 billion in capital investment.

Honda’s 2026 Digital FactBook also lists the Greensburg plant among its North American manufacturing facilities. It lists a Honda-LG battery venture separately in Jeffersonville, Ohio; that Ohio site is not an Indiana Honda automobile plant.

In 2025, reports said Honda would move next-generation Civic Hybrid production from Guanajuato, Mexico, to Indiana, with the change expected to begin in 2028. SEMA reported an anticipated volume of about 210,000 vehicles a year based on its sources. Honda’s quoted response was that it had made no such announcement and would not comment on the report.

That was a report about which existing facility might produce a future model—not an announcement that Honda was building a new Indiana plant. The cited accounts do not establish whether Honda later confirmed, changed or dropped the reported production shift, so the 2028 timing and volume should be treated as unconfirmed reporting.
