The widely repeated claim that Garth Brooks paid Sandy Mahl $125 million in their divorce is unverified. Contemporaneous reports document the divorce filing, but the available sources do not establish that amount—or disclose the settlement’s financial terms. That means the figure should not be treated as a confirmed payment, though the available evidence also does not prove it false.

What is known about the divorce

Reuters, as reported by The Irish Times, and ABC News reported that Brooks filed for divorce in Davidson County, Tennessee, in November 2000, under his full name, Troyal G. Brooks. The reports said the filing cited irreconcilable differences.

The same contemporaneous reporting places the couple’s separation in March 1999. ABC News reported that Mahl moved back to Oklahoma the following July. The couple married in 1986, according to ABC News. Biography.com reports that the divorce was finalized in 2001; the sources available here do not establish the date of a financial settlement or provide its terms.

Where the $125 million figure comes from—and what it proves

The $125 million figure circulates on secondary websites as either a divorce-settlement amount or a net-worth figure. A recent Waco Magazine article says the claims tend to cite one another, rather than a court filing or contemporaneous financial disclosure. The secondary claims do not provide a traceable calculation in the material available here.

#1 Best Overall

That is a reason to describe the amount as unverified, not to declare it false. Repetition across websites does not independently confirm a private financial agreement, and no verified on-record statement from either Brooks or Mahl confirming the $125 million amount was found in the sources reviewed.

What the sources do not establish

The available sources do not verify how much either spouse received, what assets may have been divided, whether there was a prenuptial agreement, or what financial arrangements—if any—were included in the decree. Although ABC News reported that the couple had three daughters, that fact alone does not establish custody, child support, or parenting-plan details. Do not treat the $125 million claim, or unsupported online specifics about the split, as documented settlement terms.

Divorce timeline

  • 1986: Brooks and Mahl married, according to contemporaneous reporting.
  • March 1999: Contemporaneous accounts place their separation in this month.
  • October 27, 2000: ABC News quoted Brooks saying the couple had not agreed to divorce and that their children weighed heavily on their minds. The remark predates the filing and says nothing about money.
  • November 2000: Reports said Brooks filed for divorce in Davidson County, Tennessee, citing irreconcilable differences.
  • 2001: Biography.com reports the divorce was finalized; the financial terms are not established by the sources cited here.

Brooks’s October 2000 statement, as quoted by ABC News, was: “Sandy and I have not agreed to a divorce, as the effect it will have on our children is weighing very heavy on our souls right now.” It describes their decision at that time, not a later settlement.
