F1: The Movie became a major box-office hit, but the claim that it was on track to outgross all previous Apple films combined was a June 2025 forecast—not a settled comparison. Apple later reported more than $630 million in worldwide box office. That confirms the film’s scale, but the available figures do not establish whether it surpassed a consistently measured combined total for Apple’s earlier films.
What the original box-office claim said
On June 29, 2025, 9to5Mac described the film’s opening as setting it “on a path to exceed the gross box office of all previous Apple films … combined.” The statement was a projection based on the opening weekend, not a final tally of the film against a published total for Apple’s earlier releases. 9to5Mac’s June 29 report estimated an opening of about $145 million worldwide, including $55.6 million domestically.

The Associated Press separately reported studio estimates of $55.6 million in North America and $144 million worldwide for the opening weekend. Those are AP’s reported studio estimates; the $144 million figure should not be conflated with 9to5Mac’s approximately $145 million estimate. The AP report also quoted Apple’s head of worldwide video, Zack Van Amburg, crediting the debut to interest in Formula 1 and the film’s story.
How much did F1: The Movie make worldwide?
Apple reported that the film had passed $629 million worldwide in its October 13, 2025 streaming announcement. Apple’s film information page now describes it as having surpassed $630 million. These are Apple-reported figures in different publication contexts, not an independently audited total. Apple’s film page carries the current figure.

Formula One World Championship Limited also said in its 2025 midseason review that the film had made more than $600 million and become the highest-grossing Apple film to date. That supports the conclusion that it was Apple’s top-grossing film by then; it does not supply the combined lifetime theatrical gross of every earlier Apple Original Film. Formula One’s midseason review gives production context as well as that box-office milestone.
Did it actually outgross every previous Apple film combined?
The available evidence does not prove that it did. Apple’s more-than-$630-million figure is for F1: The Movie alone. A like-for-like test would also need a defined list of prior Apple Original Films and comparable worldwide lifetime theatrical grosses for each. No primary-source combined total for that slate is established by the cited figures.

The comparison is especially sensitive to release patterns. The original forecast noted that many earlier Apple films had limited theatrical runs. A broad release and a short awards-qualifying run do not offer equivalent opportunities to earn theatrical revenue. The answer can also change depending on whether “previous Apple films” means every Apple Original Film or only titles with theatrical releases, and whether the comparison uses domestic or worldwide lifetime grosses. Without those choices and totals, “on track to exceed” should remain attributed to the original report as a forecast, not presented as a confirmed result.
Why the opening was notable
The opening estimates marked a substantial theatrical debut for an Apple film. IMAX reported a $28 million worldwide IMAX opening weekend, including $13 million in North America; it said IMAX accounted for 23% of the film’s domestic debut. Those are IMAX Corporation’s reported format-specific figures, not a separate measure of the film’s total box office. IMAX’s opening-weekend announcement provides that breakdown.

The film follows Sonny Hayes, played by Brad Pitt, a former F1 prospect who returns decades after a career-ending crash to help the struggling fictional team APXGP. He works alongside rookie Joshua Pearce, played by Damson Idris, under team owner Ruben Cervantes, played by Javier Bardem. Joseph Kosinski directed. Apple says production filmed at real Formula 1 events across the 2023 and 2024 seasons, including Spa-Francorchamps, Silverstone, Monza, Suzuka and Abu Dhabi, as well as at Daytona. That access gives the movie a distinctive motorsport setting; it remains a scripted feature, not a documentary. Apple’s film page lists more production details.
Formula One’s corporate review said the production shot more than 185 hours of footage across Grands Prix, recorded more than 2,000 hours of F1 broadcast footage for the movie, and involved 1,900 crew members, with roughly 400 at each race. These figures are Formula One’s production account, not box-office measures.
