Did Elon Musk Lose $102 Billion in Two Months? What the March 2025 Report Meant

The $102 billion figure was a reported drop in Elon Musk’s estimated net worth—not evidence that he lost or spent $102 billion in cash. Gizchina published the headline on March 7, 2025, attributing the estimate to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Its accompanying Tesla share-price and market-value figures describe early 2025, not current conditions.

What the $102 billion figure represented

Gizchina reported that Musk’s estimated wealth had fallen by $102 billion year to date, or 24% in less than ten weeks, and put his estimated wealth at $330 billion on a Thursday during that period. The article attributed those estimates to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. These are historical estimates relayed by a secondary publication; the underlying dated index entry and a methodology sufficient to reproduce the calculation are not established here. Gizchina’s March 7, 2025 report

An estimated net-worth decline is not the same as a realized cash loss. Net worth estimates value a person’s assets and liabilities at a point in time. When the market value of shares falls, an estimate tied to those holdings may fall too, even if the owner has not sold them. The report does not say Musk sold assets to realize $102 billion in losses.

What Tesla’s share-price and market-value figures said

The report separately said Tesla shares had fallen 35% year to date, from $404 to $263 per share, and that more than $400 billion had been erased from Tesla’s market capitalization. These are figures reported for early March 2025, not current prices or values. Gizchina’s March 7, 2025 report

  • Toy car with lights and music: Opening the car door can light up the lights and simulate the sound of an engine starting. It's a toy car that boys like.
  • Companion to Decoration and Cake Decorations: It plays a great decorative role on display cabinets at home and is a great decoration for boys' birthday cake parties.
  • Gift selection for toy cars for boys aged 3-12: This gift is suitable for children aged 3 and above and is a collectible for car enthusiasts.
  • Share price: The reported $404-to-$263 move describes the change in the price of one Tesla share during the period discussed.
  • Market capitalization: The reported loss of more than $400 billion concerns the market value of Tesla as a whole—its outstanding shares—not Musk’s personal loss.
  • Estimated net worth: The $102 billion figure concerns a change in an estimate of Musk’s wealth. It is a separate measure and cannot be derived from the company-wide market-capitalization figure alone.

The article does not provide a full calculation reconciling Musk’s holdings, Tesla’s share-price move, and the index’s wealth estimate.

What the report cited as possible drivers

Gizchina linked the decline to Tesla’s struggles, investor concern that Musk’s political involvement divided his attention, and concerns about falling sales in several countries. The report did not quantify how much any factor contributed or establish that these concerns caused a particular share-price or wealth change. Gizchina’s March 7, 2025 report

Why the headline’s timing matters

“In 2 months” refers to the period leading up to the March 7, 2025 article. It does not describe the two months before today. The article’s $330 billion estimate, 24% decline, Tesla share prices, and market-capitalization change are all historical figures tied to that early-2025 report.

As of October 8, 2026, the available information here does not establish Musk’s current net worth or Tesla’s current share price. The 2025 numbers should not be used as present-day values.

What later Tesla disclosures add—and what they do not

Tesla’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, reported that Musk exercised approximately 304.0 million options under the 2018 CEO Performance Award and net settled the exercise price using approximately 17.5 million shares. This later disclosure illustrates that equity positions can change through option exercises and share settlement; it does not verify the 2025 $102 billion estimate or establish a current net worth.
