That is an attributed cancellation figure, not a publicly documented net loss of 1.7 million subscribers, and the available reporting does not establish that the suspension alone caused every cancellation.
What the reported 1.7 million figure means
The figure refers to paid cancellations across three services—Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN—during September 17–23, 2025. Engadget reported Kabas’s account of confirmation from a Disney source. Disney had not publicly released the underlying weekly data in the reporting reviewed, so the exact count cannot be independently checked against a published dataset. Engadget’s account and a later Breitbart report trace to the same underlying claim; they are not independent confirmation of the weekly total.

Engadget also relayed Kabas’s comparison that the reported cancellations were 436% above usual churn. The reporting reviewed does not provide the baseline series or calculation, so that percentage should be treated as an attributed comparison rather than a separately verified statistical finding.
What later September data shows
In October, the Associated Press reported Antenna estimates for the full month of September 2025. These estimates cover U.S. consumer activity and exclude subscribers in bundle deals. They concern Disney+ and Hulu, not ESPN, and a month, not the specific September 17–23 week.

| Service or measure | September 2025 estimate | Comparison or scope |
|---|---|---|
| Disney+ cancellations | 3 million | U.S. consumer estimate for the month; bundled subscribers excluded, according to the Associated Press. |
| Disney+ churn | 8% | Up from 4% in August; monthly churn means the percentage of customers who cancel during the month, according to Antenna data reported by the Associated Press. |
| Hulu cancellations | 4.1 million | U.S. consumer estimate for the month; bundled subscribers excluded, according to the Associated Press. |
| Hulu churn | 10% | Up from 5% in August; monthly churn means the percentage of customers who cancel during the month, according to Antenna data reported by the Associated Press. |
| Signups | Not stated | Disney+ and Hulu signups were higher in September than in each of the previous five months, the Associated Press reported. |
The Antenna estimates support the conclusion that cancellations were elevated during September, but they do not verify the exact weekly total. They also show why cancellations alone do not tell you whether a service’s subscriber base shrank: the same month included higher signups.
Cancellations are not the same as net subscriber losses
A cancellation count measures customers who ended a subscription during a period. Net movement also accounts for customers who signed up. Axios, reporting Antenna’s September estimates, said Disney+ gained 2.18 million net subscribers and Hulu added 2.11 million. Those monthly net additions are a different measure from gross cancellations and do not establish what happened during the reported week. Axios’s account also illustrates why “Disney lost 1.7 million subscribers” overstates what the weekly claim says.
Later quarterly figures are broader still: the Associated Press reported that combined Disney+ and Hulu subscriptions reached 196 million, up 12.4 million from the previous quarter. That quarterly total is not a count of cancellations or net movement in the September 17–23 interval. AP’s quarterly-results coverage reported that cancellations spiked after the suspension, but the quarter-level figure cannot determine the exact effect of that week.

ABC suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! on September 17, 2025. Disney announced on September 22 that the program would return the following night. The reported cancellation interval overlaps the suspension and the ensuing backlash, making it reasonable to describe the spike as occurring during that period. The figures do not isolate the suspension as the sole reason people canceled, however. The Guardian’s account includes Disney’s explanation that it suspended production to avoid further inflaming a tense situation and later decided to return the show after conversations with Kimmel.
Quick Recap
Rank #3
How to read the headline claim
- Reported, not publicly documented: More than 1.7 million is an attributed weekly cancellation figure from a Disney source, not a published, independently audited count.
- Cancellations, not net losses: The weekly claim counts cancellations across Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN; it does not subtract new subscriptions.
- Different data sets: Antenna’s later figures estimate monthly U.S. cancellations for Disney+ and Hulu and exclude bundle subscribers.
- Timing is not proof of sole cause: The cancellation spike coincided with the suspension and backlash, but the available figures do not establish why each customer canceled.
