The apparent risk of collapse belonged to the earlier sale process: a different bidder, a consortium led by James Bord, withdrew in February. The two events should not be confused.
What happened to the Storch-led takeover?
Arise Capital Partners, led by David and Michael Storch with Tom Costin, completed the acquisition in May 2026. On 2 May, the English Football League (EFL) said the administrators had formally concluded an agreement with Arise and that Sheffield Wednesday was no longer in administration: EFL announcement. On 5 May, joint administrator BTG confirmed the sale had been completed in accordance with relevant requirements: BTG completion announcement.
So the current answer to whether Storch and his team walked away is no. Storch said on behalf of Arise: “We know trust must be earned.” BTG’s 5 May announcement
Which takeover bid actually collapsed?
The failed bid was made by a separate consortium led by James Bord. On 25 February 2026, that group withdrew its proposed takeover. BBC Sport reported outstanding documents and a disagreement over the club’s valuation relative to the consortium’s reported £47.8 million offer. The Guardian reported that further due diligence led the group to conclude it had offered too much. These are source-attributed accounts, not one definitive explanation for the withdrawal: BBC Sport and The Guardian reports.

The withdrawing consortium said: “The historic mishandling of the club and pattern of catastrophic underinvestment means our sizeable binding bid can no longer be justified.” That statement was from the Bord-led group, not Storch’s Arise consortium: BBC Sport, 25 February 2026.
| Bidder | Timing | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| James Bord-led consortium | Withdrew on 25 February 2026 | Proposed takeover did not proceed; BBC reported a £47.8 million offer |
| Arise Capital Partners, led by David and Michael Storch with Tom Costin | Named preferred bidder in March; sale completed in May 2026 | Acquisition completed and club exited administration |
Why did completion look uncertain?
Sheffield Wednesday entered administration on 24 October 2025, and the subsequent sale process included a failed bid before Arise emerged as preferred bidder. On 11 March 2026, BBC Sport reported that Arise’s bid remained subject to EFL scrutiny. Storch described a stabilization plan and said further investors would be needed to support sustained success; those comments came while the deal was still pending, not after completion: BBC Sport, 11 March 2026.

The timetable then became compressed. BBC Sport reported that Arise set a 1 May deadline and completed final paperwork ahead of the planned transfer of the EFL’s owners-process role to the Independent Football Regulator on 5 May. The EFL announced the agreement on 2 May: BBC Sport’s account of the timeline; EFL announcement. Those pressures explain why the deal attracted uncertainty, but they do not change its eventual outcome.

Completion did not remove every financial constraint. The EFL said Sheffield Wednesday met the League’s requirements under its new ownership and was no longer regarded as in administration. The EFL Board decided not to impose a 15-point deduction on exit, but imposed a budget restriction for the next two seasons. Player signings were to follow an agreed business plan. BTG also said wage and transfer parameters had been agreed: EFL announcement; BTG completion announcement.
