A reported 2024 hack of a Disney Confluence server was alleged to have exposed about 2.5GB of data, but Disney had not confirmed that incident when Check Point reported on it. The claim that hackers acted in retaliation for Club Penguin’s shutdown is also an attributed motive, not an independently established fact.
Was Disney hacked by Club Penguin fans?
Check Point Research’s bulletin covering June 3–9, 2024, reported an allegation that Club Penguin fans hacked a Disney Confluence server and exfiltrated approximately 2.5GB of internal data. Check Point said Disney had not confirmed the reported breach at the time. The sources available here do not establish that Disney later confirmed this specific Confluence incident.

HotHardware’s June 7, 2024 coverage framed the alleged activity as fans seeking more information about Club Penguin after Disney shut down the game. That is a news outlet’s characterization of motive, not an official account or independently verified explanation. Calling the incident “retaliation” therefore goes beyond what the reporting establishes.
What was reportedly in the 2.5GB of data?
Check Point said the reportedly exfiltrated files included outdated Club Penguin documents as well as more recent Disney corporate information, including internal developer tools, strategies and credentials. The bulletin does not authenticate a complete inventory of the alleged files, so those categories should be understood as reported contents rather than a verified list.

The available reporting does not establish that Club Penguin players’ account details or payment information were exposed. It also does not provide enough evidence to determine exactly what the alleged credentials could access or whether they remained valid.
How this allegation differs from Disney’s later SEC disclosure
Disney’s filing for the quarter ended June 29, 2024 described a separate ongoing investigation into the exfiltration and unauthorized release of over one terabyte of data from a company communication system. Disney said that, based on its investigation to that point, the incident had not materially affected operations. The filing identifies a different system and a different scale; it does not confirm the earlier 2.5GB Confluence allegation.

Why Club Penguin mattered to fans
Disney’s 2007 acquisition announcement said Club Penguin launched in October 2005. It described an online virtual world where users played as penguin avatars, chatted, took part in group activities and had virtual homes. Disney reported more than 700,000 current paid subscribers at the time of the acquisition announcement. That history helps explain the enduring interest in the game, but it does not establish who accessed Disney’s systems or why.
