No evidence establishes that China has uncovered enough thorium to power the country for 60,000 years. What China’s Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) reported is a research milestone: an experimental molten-salt reactor converted thorium into uranium fuel. That is not proof of a limitless energy supply or a commercial power station.
What China actually reported
CAS said its Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics (SINAP) achieved thorium-to-uranium fuel conversion in an experimental Thorium Molten Salt Reactor (TMSR). The report says experimental data collected after thorium fuel was loaded confirmed the technical feasibility of using thorium in a molten-salt reactor system. CAS’s account of the result describes it as the first such conversion in a TMSR.
Reporting by Xinhua, republished by the China International Center for Science and Technology Innovation, describes the conversion pathway as thorium-232 becoming protactinium-233 and then uranium-233. The uranium produced is the fissile fuel of interest; the reported result is a fuel-cycle experiment, not a demonstration that the reactor can generate commercial electricity. The republished Xinhua report identifies the reactor as a 2-megawatt-thermal experimental unit.
Why the “60,000 years” claim is not established
The 60,000-year figure appears in secondary circulation about China’s thorium resources, but the sources surfaced for this claim do not provide a primary geological resource assessment or a transparent calculation supporting it. Without those, it cannot be treated as a verified estimate of how long China could meet its energy needs.

Such a projection would require more than a quantity of thorium in the ground. It would also depend on how much is economically recoverable, how efficiently reactors convert it into usable fuel, fuel-cycle losses and burnup, and how China’s future energy demand is defined. The sources available for the claim do not establish those assumptions. “China discovers a 60,000-year supply” and “limitless energy” are therefore headline framings, not conclusions supported by the reported experiment.
What the reactor’s size and timeline mean
The reported reactor is a 2 MWt experimental unit in the Hongshagang industrial cluster in Minqin County, administered by Wuwei City, Gansu Province. MWt means megawatts of thermal output. It is not a reported 2-megawatt electrical power station, and the result does not show that the unit supplies commercial electricity.
CAS says the program began in 2011. SINAP’s stated next ambition is a 100-megawatt demonstration project, with demonstration application targeted by 2035. That is a development goal, not an operating facility or a completed commercial deployment. The available reporting does not establish the electrical output, cost, licensing status, or commercial schedule of that proposed project.
What molten-salt reactor claims do—and do not—show
CAS and the Xinhua-republished report describe molten-salt reactors as using high-temperature molten salt as coolant, with features such as water-free cooling, low-pressure operation and high-temperature output. These are design characteristics presented in the reporting; they should not be read as proof that every molten-salt reactor design has identical safety performance or operating requirements.

The reports also discuss possible links with renewable energy, heat storage, hydrogen production and chemical processes. Those are prospective applications. The thorium-conversion milestone does not demonstrate an integrated system delivering those services at commercial scale.

A substantiated claim would need to identify the amount and classification of thorium resources, explain what portion is recoverable, and show a reproducible calculation linking usable fuel to a defined measure of China’s energy consumption. It would also need to account for conversion performance, fuel-cycle losses and the time horizon and demand assumptions. The reporting of the reactor experiment and demonstration goal does not supply that evidence.
A search result for the World Nuclear Industry Status Report 2025 referenced a proposed 10 MWe / 60 MWt project and projections, but the report PDF could not be inspected in the available page view. That fragment does not verify the 60,000-year resource claim or establish the proposed project’s current status.
