On October 25, 2024, Reuters relayed a Wall Street Journal report that Boeing was exploring a sale of some space-related operations, based on people familiar with the matter. The reported scope centered on NASA work—not Boeing’s entire space portfolio—and Boeing said it does not comment on market rumors or speculation.
What Boeing was reportedly considering
Reuters reported on October 25, 2024, that the Wall Street Journal had described Boeing as exploring the sale of parts of its space business. The account cited people familiar with the matter. It was a report about a possible consideration, not an announced transaction, signed agreement, or completed divestiture. Boeing did not confirm the report; its response to Reuters was: “Boeing doesn’t comment on market rumors or speculation.” Reuters’ October 25, 2024 report.
Which Boeing space programs could have been involved?
The reported scope concerned selected NASA-related operations. It did not describe a sale of all Boeing space activities.
| Reported status | NASA-related work | What the report said |
|---|---|---|
| Included in the reported scope | Starliner spacecraft | The Wall Street Journal report, relayed by Reuters, said the business being explored for sale included Starliner. |
| Included in the reported scope | International Space Station support operations | The report said operations supporting the ISS were also included. |
| Reportedly excluded | Space Launch System (SLS) unit | The report said the unit building NASA’s SLS was not part of the potential sale. |
These were reported boundaries, not published transaction terms. Reuters also reported that Starliner had more than $1.8 billion in private cost overruns; that figure is Reuters’ reporting, not a figure Boeing is established here as having published or independently verified. What later Boeing and Reuters reporting shows
Later disclosures provide context but do not settle whether private discussions about a narrower sale took place. Reuters’ August 14, 2026 report described commercial aerospace, defense, and space as Boeing’s core businesses and discussed other divestitures following a 2024 portfolio review. Reuters’ reporting on the reported sale consideration.
Boeing’s July 28, 2026 second-quarter release continued to report activity in its Defense, Space & Security segment, including a U.S. Space Force award. The company reported an $85 billion backlog for that entire segment at the end of the second quarter of 2026; that is not a space-only backlog. Continued segment reporting does not rule out every possible narrower sale or later change. Boeing’s second-quarter 2026 results.

So, is Boeing selling its space business?
The available public account establishes that a possible sale of selected NASA-related operations was reported in October 2024. It does not establish that Boeing announced or completed a sale, or that the whole space business was put up for sale. Later 2026 reporting and Boeing disclosures show space-related activity remained part of the company’s public business reporting, but they do not conclusively resolve whether any private or narrower sale discussions occurred.
