Did Bill Ackman really invest $2.8 billion in Uber?
Pershing Square’s documents confirm that its funds acquired an Uber position in early 2025. They do not disclose a share count or a dated market value that verifies a $2.8 billion Uber investment. The $2.8 billion figure should not be presented as the value of the Uber stake on the evidence available here.
A March 2026 news report associates $2.8 billion with private commitments in Pershing Square fundraising, rather than a purchase of Uber shares. The two claims are not interchangeable: fundraising commitments describe money pledged to a fund or vehicle, while an investment position is the value of securities held at a particular date. A dated filing establishing Uber shares and their value would be needed to substantiate the headline amount as a holding.
When did Pershing Square buy Uber, and what did it disclose?
Pershing Square’s 2024 annual report says its funds acquired the position in early 2025. The firm said the share-price decline at the end of 2024 created what it considered an attractive valuation. Its June 2025 interim report later listed Uber as a current equity position and discussed the company’s platform and autonomous-vehicle partnerships.

These are disclosures and assessments by Pershing Square, Uber’s investor—not an independently established conclusion that the shares were undervalued or that the investment will succeed. The reviewed materials do not establish the stake’s exact share count or market value.
Why did Pershing Square buy Uber?
It saw an attractive valuation after a share-price decline
Pershing Square’s stated view was that Uber’s late-2024 share-price decline offered an attractive entry point. That is the manager’s valuation judgment; the documents do not make it a guarantee of future returns.

It viewed Uber as a large mobility and delivery marketplace
In its February 2025 annual investor presentation, Pershing Square described Uber as a global two-sided marketplace. Its thesis was that growth in revenue, expense control and operating leverage could translate into earnings growth and capital returns. The June interim report also characterized Uber as a mobility and delivery platform with growth prospects.
It considered autonomous-vehicle fears overstated
Pershing Square said it viewed concerns that autonomous vehicles could undermine Uber as misplaced. The June 2025 report treated partnerships with autonomous-vehicle companies as part of the investment thesis. That framing reflects the manager’s view; it does not establish how autonomous vehicles will affect Uber’s future economics.
