Yes—cumulatively, by the end of the third quarter of 2024. Berkshire Hathaway’s Apple position fell from about 915.6 million shares at year-end 2023 to roughly 300 million at September 30, 2024. That is a reduction of more than half, but it was not a complete exit. The distinction matters: the 49.33% decline reported for the second quarter alone was just under half.
How Berkshire’s Apple share count changed in 2024
The figures below are quarter-end snapshots. The year-end 2023 and March 2024 figures were reported by The Associated Press; the June 2024 figure comes from Berkshire Hathaway’s Form 13F; and the September 2024 figure was reported by AP after Berkshire’s third-quarter disclosure.

Using the rounded figures, Berkshire’s position declined by about 615.6 million shares between year-end 2023 and September 30, 2024—roughly 67% of the starting position. Because the March and September totals are rounded, treat that cumulative percentage as an estimate, not an exact calculation.
Why “more than half” needs a time frame
The statement is accurate when it describes the cumulative reduction from year-end 2023 through Q3 2024. It is misleading if it suggests that Berkshire cut the position by more than half in Q2 alone: the Q2 filing showed a 49.33% quarter-over-quarter decline, just below 50%.

Shares sold during Q1, Q2 and Q3 are separate from that comparison. A quarter-over-quarter percentage uses the immediately preceding quarter as its baseline; the cumulative percentage compares the later holding with the year-end 2023 position.
Did Berkshire sell all of its Apple shares?
No. Berkshire still held roughly 300 million Apple shares at September 30, 2024, according to AP’s account of the Q3 disclosure. That is a substantial remaining stake, not an exit. The figure describes the holding at that reporting date, not Berkshire’s live position today.

What was Warren Buffett’s reason for selling?
The cited filings and reporting establish changes in Berkshire’s share count, but they do not establish a definitive reason for the Apple sales. Berkshire was reported as a net seller of stocks in Q1 2024, but that broader portfolio activity does not prove why it reduced Apple specifically.
At Berkshire’s 2024 annual meeting, Buffett said, “We’d love to spend it but we won’t spend it unless we’re doing something with very little risk that will make us a lot of money.” The Associated Press reported the comment in the context of Berkshire’s cash deployment generally; it was not a stated explanation for the Apple sales. In May 2024, AP also reported that Buffett expected Apple to remain a long-term holding. That was a view reported at the time, not a guarantee about later decisions.

What the filings can—and cannot—tell you
A Form 13F is a periodic report of specified investment holdings, not a real-time record of trades. Its reported position lets readers compare holdings at filing dates, but does not by itself identify each sale’s execution date or price, realized gains, tax effects, or who made a particular investment decision. Berkshire’s 2024 annual report and 2024 Form 10-K are available on its investor site.
The figures in this article verify the historical change through September 30, 2024. They do not establish Berkshire’s latest Apple share count as of October 8, 2026; a current figure requires checking the latest SEC filing.
