Anne Hathaway and Italian businessman Raffaello Follieri reportedly ended their roughly four-year relationship shortly before his June 24, 2008, arrest. Follieri was accused of fraud and money laundering involving an alleged scheme to mislead investors about Vatican connections; he later pleaded guilty to 14 counts and was sentenced to four years and six months in prison. The reporting establishes the timing, but not Hathaway’s full private reasons for ending the relationship.

Who was Anne Hathaway’s ex?

Raffaello Follieri, an Italian businessman, dated Hathaway for about four years. Their relationship ended shortly before his arrest in June 2008, according to contemporary reports. A 2012 interview with Follieri also placed the breakup before the arrest, though that account was retrospective.

Did Hathaway break up with him before the arrest?

Yes. Reuters reports published by ABC News said the couple had split just before Follieri’s June arrest. One ABC News report gave a more precise claim—that the breakup happened six hours before the arrest—but attributed that timing to Vanity Fair. Treat the broad chronology as reported; the exact six-hour interval is a second-hand detail, not a timing independently established in the other contemporary accounts.

Hathaway later described learning of the arrest as a sudden shock. In an interview for W magazine, quoted by ABC News, she said: “It’s a situation where the rug was pulled out from under me all of a sudden. But just as suddenly, my friends threw another rug back under me.” She said she stayed at a friend’s home for a week and left the New York apartment she had shared with Follieri.

What was Follieri accused of, and what was the outcome?

At the time of the June 24, 2008, arrest, the charges were allegations, not a conviction. Prosecutors alleged that between 2005 and 2007 Follieri misled investors by claiming close Vatican connections that would let him buy unwanted Catholic Church property at discounted prices. The arrest report listed conspiracy, wire fraud, and money laundering charges. ABC News Australia’s June 2008 report, carrying Reuters reporting, describes the allegations.

On September 10, 2008, Follieri pleaded guilty to 14 counts involving conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, and money laundering. In a statement read in court, he said, “I knew what I was doing was wrong.” Reuters reporting published by ABC News Australia covered the plea.

In October 2008, a judge sentenced him to four years and six months in prison and ordered three years of supervision after his release. The report said he would be deported to Italy after completing the sentence. ABC News Australia’s October report covered the sentence.

What is known about Hathaway’s reasons?

The available reporting links the breakup closely in time to Follieri’s arrest, but it does not establish Hathaway’s complete reasoning or prove that the arrest itself caused her decision. Her quoted remarks describe shock and the support she received from friends; they do not explain every factor behind the breakup. Nothing in these reports establishes that Hathaway knew about, participated in, or endorsed Follieri’s criminal conduct.
