Anderson Cooper did not receive a confirmed $1.5 million cash inheritance. The Los Angeles Times reported in 2019 that a source close to Gloria Vanderbilt put the value of her estate near $1.5 million, and that Cooper inherited the bulk of it. The figure was an estimate of the estate, not a documented payout to Cooper. Cooper has said he does not plan to leave his children a large, unrestricted fortune, though he has also said he would pay for their college education.

What did Anderson Cooper inherit from Gloria Vanderbilt?

In a 2019 report, the Los Angeles Times said Vanderbilt’s will left the bulk of her estate to Cooper and a Manhattan co-op to her eldest son, Leopold “Stan” Stokowski. A source close to the family placed the estate’s value near $1.5 million and disputed a much higher estimate then circulating.

That reported valuation is not the same as a verified amount Cooper personally received. The account does not establish that he inherited exactly $1.5 million in cash; it describes the approximate value of the estate and its reported distribution.

Why did Cooper say he expected no inheritance?

In a 2014 interview with Howard Stern, Cooper said Vanderbilt had made clear there was no trust fund for him. ABC News quoted him saying, “My mom’s made clear to me that there’s no trust fund. There’s none of that,” and, “I don’t believe in inheriting money.”

Those comments concerned the trust fund he expected while growing up. They do not rule out the later inheritance reported after Vanderbilt died. The Los Angeles Times’ 2019 account described what her will provided at her death, while Cooper’s earlier remarks described what he had been told to expect.

Cooper also explained his personal view of large inheritances in 2014: he wanted children to work early and develop responsibility, though he said he did not know whether that might lead him to leave them some money. That was a view, not a general finding about how inheritances affect motivation.

What has Cooper said about leaving money to his sons?

In 2021, Cooper said on the Morning Meeting podcast that he did not believe in passing on “huge amounts of money.” He drew a distinction between a large inheritance and paying for education: “I don’t intend to have some sort of pot of gold for my son,” he said, adding that college would be paid for and then his son would need to earn a living. The remarks were reported by the Los Angeles Times.

In a 2023 interview with Town & Country, Cooper said his father had made clear that no Vanderbilt fortune was waiting for him. He recalled being glad for that expectation because it pushed him to work and discover what he cared about. He said he wanted his sons to find what drives them, but also said they were too young to discuss wealth with and that he had not worked out all the answers.

Has Cooper finalized an estate plan for his children?

His public comments support a preference against leaving a large, unrestricted inheritance, alongside a stated intention to pay for college. They do not establish the terms of a current will or trust, or a final estate plan. Cooper’s 2023 comments make clear that some questions about how to talk with his sons about wealth remained unresolved at that point.
