A former AWS developer alleged that Amazon’s handling of eliminated teams, internal job options and return-to-office requirements pressured some employees to resign. His account does not establish that Amazon had a company-wide plan to covertly cut staff. Amazon disputed his characterization and said its office policy was intended to support collaboration, culture, learning and customer service.
What did the former AWS developer claim?
Justin Garrison, a former AWS developer, described his experience in a blog post published December 30, 2023, and updated January 10. He said that on September 1, 2023, he was told his team and an adjacent team were being eliminated. According to Garrison, employees were encouraged to remain at Amazon and seek other internal roles, but the available options came with trade-offs such as lower pay, lower titles or a return-to-office requirement. Garrison’s account is first-person testimony, not an independently verified finding about Amazon’s broader workforce practices.
Garrison also said he asked about severance, was told it would be available after other options had been exhausted, and then experienced delays in getting an answer. His January 10 update said he had quit Amazon. These details describe his account of events; the reviewed reporting does not independently establish what happened in each interaction.
What did Amazon say?
In a statement quoted by ITPro, Amazon rejected Garrison’s account: “We’ve repeatedly been clear about what drove our decision on RTO, and these inaccurate and misleading anecdotes just aren’t factual,” the company said. That is Amazon’s response to the allegations, rather than an independent determination of the events Garrison described. ITPro reported both accounts on January 5, 2024.

What was Amazon’s stated reason for return to office?
In an employee message, CEO Andy Jassy said Amazon expected employees to work together in the office at least three days a week, with the change planned to take effect May 1. He cited collaboration, culture, learning and customer service as reasons for the policy. Jassy’s announcement documents the company’s stated rationale at that time. It does not show whether the policy caused employees to resign, nor does it prove or disprove Garrison’s interpretation. The announcement concerns a 2023 policy change and should not be treated as confirmation of Amazon’s current requirements.
Does the evidence show a covert effort to cut staff?
No. The material available in the cited reporting documents an allegation about one former employee’s experience, Amazon’s denial and the company’s stated RTO rationale. It does not establish that Amazon deliberately used workplace changes to induce resignations across the company. Garrison’s account is relevant evidence of what he says happened to him, but it cannot by itself demonstrate a company-wide strategy or its effects on other employees.

ITPro also quoted Jim Moore, an employee-relations expert at Hamilton Nash, who said poor judgment seemed more likely than a deliberate “silent sacking” exercise in Garrison’s case. That is an expert’s interpretation reported by ITPro, not a legal ruling or a finding about Amazon’s intent.

| Source | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Justin Garrison’s blog | Garrison’s first-person account of team eliminations, internal role options, severance discussions and his decision to quit. | Whether the same experience was widespread or whether Amazon intended to prompt resignations across the company. |
| Amazon statement quoted by ITPro | The company disputed Garrison’s anecdotes and characterized them as inaccurate and misleading. | An independent verification of the events or proof of the consequences of its RTO policy. |
| Andy Jassy’s employee message | Amazon’s stated reasons for an office expectation announced in 2023. | Whether that policy caused resignations or was used to covertly reduce staff. |
| ITPro’s expert commentary | Moore’s view that poor judgment was more likely than deliberate silent sacking in this case. | A court decision, legal advice or a definitive finding about intent. |
The most accurate description is therefore that Garrison alleged that Amazon’s actions pressured him and others to leave, while Amazon disputed his characterization. The available sources do not verify the headline’s implication of a company-wide covert plan.
