Jeff Bezos bought The Washington Post’s newspaper publishing businesses for a stated $250 million—not Amazon. The Washington Post Company announced the agreement on August 5, 2013, and the sale closed on October 1, 2013.
Did Amazon buy The Washington Post?
No. Bezos purchased the newspaper publishing businesses in his individual capacity through Nash Holdings LLC, his private investment company. Amazon was not the buyer and did not acquire The Post. The phrase “Amazon CEO” describes Bezos’s public role at the time, not the purchaser in the transaction. The Washington Post’s contemporaneous explanation clarified that distinction.
How much did Bezos pay?
The Washington Post Company announced a purchase price of $250 million, subject to normal working capital adjustments, payable at closing. The figure is the announced price, not a separately established later valuation or a detailed breakdown of the assets’ worth. The seller disclosed the terms in its August 5, 2013 SEC-filed announcement.
What did the deal include?
The agreement covered the seller’s newspaper publishing businesses, including The Washington Post newspaper. The Post’s contemporaneous announcement described The Post and affiliated publications. It was not a purchase of every business held by The Washington Post Company; the scope should not be confused with the seller’s entire portfolio. The SEC filing describes the newspaper publishing businesses.

Who owned The Washington Post before Bezos?
The seller was The Washington Post Company, which had been under Graham family local control for 80 years. Donald E. Graham, then the company’s chairman and chief executive, endorsed Bezos in the sale announcement: “Jeff Bezos’ proven technology and business genius, his long-term approach and his personal decency make him a uniquely good new owner for the Post.” That was the seller’s assessment of its buyer, not an independent evaluation.
When did the sale close?
The company announced the agreement on August 5, 2013. The transaction closed on October 1, 2013, transferring the newspaper assets to Nash Holdings and ending the Graham family’s 80 years of local control, according to The Post’s closing report.

Who owns The Washington Post now?
The Washington Post’s current About page identifies Jeff Bezos as its owner and describes him as Amazon’s executive chairman. That current ownership reference does not change the transaction’s original structure: Bezos, through Nash Holdings, was the buyer in 2013, not Amazon.
