The $10 billion figure was a 2022 estimate that Amazon was on pace to lose that year on Alexa and related devices—not an audited loss for Alexa alone. The “colossal failure” phrase came from a former Amazon employee describing Alexa as a missed opportunity. Amazon’s response has since been Alexa+, a generative-AI assistant that, as of September 1, 2026, is available to U.S. customers under a free limited tier, a $19.99 monthly plan, or an unlimited benefit for Prime members.
Did Amazon really lose $10 billion on Alexa?
Not in the precise sense the headline can suggest. A 2022 Business Insider report, republished by Yahoo Finance, said Amazon was on pace to lose around $10 billion that year on Alexa and related devices. That was an estimate attributed to people familiar with the business, not a separately audited result for Alexa by itself.
The same reporting put the wider context in a different accounting unit: Amazon’s Worldwide Digital unit lost more than $3 billion in operating income in the first quarter of 2022. That unit included Echo smart speakers, Alexa and Prime Video, so its quarterly loss cannot be treated as an Alexa-only figure or directly substituted for the roughly $10 billion full-year pace estimate.
In other words, the headline captures reported financial pressure around Alexa and associated hardware, but it does not establish that Alexa alone lost exactly $10 billion, nor does it provide a complete audited breakdown of the costs behind that estimate.

What did “colossal failure” mean?
The phrase was criticism, not an official Amazon finding. In the Business Insider report, a former Amazon employee said, “Alexa is a colossal failure of imagination.” The former employee also described it as “a wasted opportunity.” The comments reflected a view that Amazon had not realized Alexa’s larger potential; they were not a formal company assessment of the product or its financial results.
Why was Alexa difficult to monetize?
Amazon put Echo hardware into homes to make Alexa readily available, but common voice-assistant tasks—checking the weather, setting timers and playing music—did not necessarily produce a recurring revenue stream. Business Insider’s interviews described low morale, unsuccessful monetization efforts, and weak engagement from some users and developers.

Those reports do not establish a precise accounting explanation for the losses. In particular, they do not show that the reported figure was caused solely by Amazon selling hardware below cost or subsidizing Echo devices. It is safer to understand the number as an estimate for a combined Alexa-and-related-devices operation, rather than assign it to one cost category.
A May 2024 report summarizing CNBC said Amazon had sold more than 500 million Alexa-enabled devices as of 2023, while the assistant still had not produced an ongoing revenue stream. The report said Amazon was considering a generative-AI upgrade and a monthly fee. Those were plans being considered at the time, not final product terms.

How Alexa+ changes Amazon’s business model
Amazon announced Alexa+ in February 2025 as a generative-AI assistant and proposed a recurring price of $19.99 per month, with access included for Prime members. Its U.S. launch began in waves, initially targeting households with Echo Show 8, Echo Show 10, Echo Show 15 and Echo Show 21 devices.
Amazon’s September 1, 2026 update describes a broader U.S. offering:

For a household considering the paid option, the relevant comparison is not just Alexa+’s monthly fee. It is whether the included Prime benefit is useful to that household, whether the free tier meets its needs, and whether the services and devices it already uses work with Alexa+. These are U.S. terms; availability and features should be checked for the customer’s region.
What Amazon says Alexa+ can do
Amazon’s product description says Alexa+ can connect with services and devices including Philips Hue, Roborock, OpenTable, Uber Eats, Spotify and Apple Music. It says the assistant can be accessed through Alexa-enabled devices, Alexa.com and the Alexa mobile app. Those are Amazon’s product claims; actual feature availability can vary by region and integration.

Do you need a new Echo for Alexa+?
Not necessarily, but the available information does not establish that every existing Echo model supports every Alexa+ feature. Amazon’s first rollout targeted specified Echo Show models, while its current description also names the Alexa app and Alexa.com as access routes. Alexa+ remains connected to Amazon’s Echo hardware and broader ecosystem, but model-by-model compatibility is a separate question.
Before buying a replacement device, check Amazon’s current Alexa+ compatibility information for the exact Echo model you own and the features you want. The initial rollout list from February 2025 should not be treated as a complete or current list of supported devices.
What the headline does—and does not—tell customers
The financial story is about Amazon’s difficulty turning broad adoption of a voice assistant and its devices into durable revenue. Alexa+ is Amazon’s attempt to make the service more capable and give it a subscription and Prime-bundled business model. The available figures and product announcements do not establish whether that strategy has made Alexa profitable.
For a household deciding what to use or pay for, compare the recurring cost and any subscription benefit, the compatibility of current devices and smart-home services, the assistant’s ability to handle the tasks that matter, privacy controls and data settings, and regional availability. The cited Amazon materials describe Alexa+ features and integrations, but they do not provide independent comparative testing against other assistants.
