Index Ventures and Sequoia Capital co-led the round; Index said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman participated as an angel investor. The investment was reported as Altman’s personal participation, not an investment by OpenAI.
What Apex announced
Apex was founded in 2023 by Matan Derman, CEO, and Tomer Avni, CPO, according to launch coverage from SecurityWeek and Index Ventures. The company’s May 2024 announcement paired its stealth exit with a $7 million seed round co-led by Index and Sequoia. Index identified Altman among the angel investors; SecurityWeek also reported his participation.
Index said Apex planned to use the funds for product development, hiring, and go-to-market work. It also said the startup was already serving several Fortune 500 companies; that customer claim was made by the investor and is not independently substantiated in the available coverage.
What Apex’s software was designed to do
Apex presented its product as a security layer for organizations adopting AI models and applications. The stated goal was to give security teams visibility into employee AI use, let organizations set rules for that use, and help identify violations of security standards or AI-related attacks for investigation and response.

SecurityWeek described a portal through which employees could interact with multiple AI products, with organizational visibility and policy enforcement for administrators. Its launch-era list of supported services included ChatGPT Enterprise, Google Gemini, Microsoft Bing, Amazon Q, Microsoft and GitHub copilots, and custom customer applications. That list describes what the outlet reported at launch; it is not confirmation of current integrations.
What the announcement does—and does not—establish
The launch materials describe intended capabilities, not independently tested security results. They do not establish that Apex independently certifies compliance, prevents every data leak, or has demonstrated a particular level of protection. Index also cited a figure of more than 90% of Fortune 500 companies in connection with employees using ChatGPT for work, but its post did not identify the underlying study or methodology. That figure should be understood as Index’s statement, not a verified measurement of Apex customers.

Current availability, pricing, operating status, integrations, and security efficacy are not established by the launch coverage. An Index Ventures company profile accessed September 30, 2026, continues to identify Apex as an AI security platform and lists Derman and Avni, but a profile alone does not show that the company remains active or that its product is available.

The round put Apex among startups seeking to address a practical enterprise problem: employees can adopt AI services faster than security teams can understand where organizational data is going or enforce consistent rules. Apex’s pitch was to put monitoring, policies, and response into one layer across services. The funding announcement establishes investor backing for that effort in 2024; it does not, by itself, establish product effectiveness or commercial success.
