Diageo is closing the Guinness Open Gate Brewery in Halethorpe, Maryland, to the public on November 1, 2026, with the site’s operations expected to wind down by the end of the year, according to Baltimore Fishbowl. The closure affects a brewery and visitor venue—not all Guinness brewing in the United States.
What is closing, and when?
The closure is at Guinness Open Gate Brewery in Halethorpe, Maryland, in the Baltimore area. Baltimore Fishbowl reported on October 1, 2026, that the brewery announced the closure through its social media channels. The timeline distinguishes the end of public visits from the end of operations:
- November 1, 2026: the venue is reported to close to the public.
- By the end of 2026: facility operations are expected to wind down.
The report does not specify a more detailed schedule for the operational wind-down.
Why is Diageo closing the site?
A Diageo spokesperson told Baltimore Fishbowl the company had undertaken a “careful review” of its “operations and long-standing business priorities.” The spokesperson said, “This was not a decision we made lightly,” and expressed pride in what was built in Baltimore, gratitude to contributors, and a commitment to supporting employees and the community.

Baltimore Fishbowl also characterized rising operating costs, lower demand, and other economic pressures as contributing to the site becoming unviable. That is the local report’s account; Diageo’s quoted formal explanation is its review of operations and priorities.
What happens to employees and community support?
Baltimore Fishbowl reports that Diageo plans a $250,000 community fund and that its immediate focus includes employee resources and assistance. The report does not state how the fund will be administered, who will qualify, or how many employees are affected by the closure.

What role did the Maryland brewery play?
Diageo opened the Maryland Open Gate Brewery in 2018, describing it as the first Guinness brewery on U.S. soil in 64 years. It was designed as both a production site and a public destination, with a taproom, brewery tours, merchandise shops, grounds, and a restaurant. Diageo’s opening announcement called it a milestone in Guinness history.
Diageo said at the time that Maryland production would include Guinness Blonde and experimental beers. The announcement also said Guinness Draught and other classic stouts would be brewed exclusively in Ireland and imported to the United States. That is the company’s description of the 2018 arrangement; it does not confirm every current production or supply detail. The Maryland closure therefore does not, on its own, mean that production of Guinness Draught or classic stout is ending in the United States.

Does the closure affect Guinness’s other U.S. brewery?
Diageo described its Chicago Open Gate Brewery as Guinness’s second U.S. brewery location when announcing its opening in September 2023. That announcement said signature Guinness Draught, Extra Stout, and Foreign Extra Stout served there came from Dublin. The sources reporting the Maryland closure do not establish Chicago’s current operating status as of October 5, 2026, so the Maryland announcement should not be treated as confirmation of a change there.
