A deposit-match bonus adds promotional funds to a qualifying deposit, but the headline percentage does not tell you how much play is required or when money can be withdrawn. Check the wagering calculation, eligible games, deadline, stake limits and withdrawal terms before accepting. Rules differ by jurisdiction, so an offer available in one country may not be available—or lawful—where you are.
What a deposit-match bonus means
A casino deposit match gives you promotional funds calculated from an eligible deposit, usually up to a stated cap. For example, a 100% match means the bonus amount may equal the qualifying deposit, subject to the offer’s maximum and other conditions. Bonus funds are promotional, not automatically cash you can withdraw: the UK Gambling Commission’s glossary includes deposit-matching funds in its definition of a bonus (UK Gambling Commission glossary).
The key question is not just “What percentage is matched?” It is what you must do to satisfy the terms before bonus funds, or winnings tied to them, become withdrawable.
How to calculate the wagering requirement
A wagering or play-through requirement sets a qualifying total of bets. The multiplier must be applied to a stated base: the bonus alone, or the deposit plus bonus. A bet may also count for only part of its face value, depending on the game’s contribution rate.

Bonus-only calculation
The Danish Gambling Authority’s worked example uses a DKK 100 deposit and DKK 100 bonus with a 10× requirement on the bonus: DKK 100 × 10 = DKK 1,000 in qualifying wagers. This is an official example, not a claim about what casino offers generally require (Danish Gambling Authority guidance).
Deposit-plus-bonus calculation
If the same 10× multiplier applies to the DKK 100 deposit plus DKK 100 bonus, the calculation is (DKK 100 + DKK 100) × 10 = DKK 2,000. The multiplier is identical, but the required wagering doubles because its base is different.

Game contribution changes progress
If a game contributes 10%, a DKK 100 bet credits only DKK 10 toward the requirement, subject to the offer’s terms. Some games may contribute less or nothing. A headline wagering total therefore does not tell you how much qualifying play is needed unless you also know which games count and at what rates.

Great Britain
The UK Gambling Commission’s current LCCP Condition 5.1.1 requires promotion terms to be clear, transparent, fair and readily accessible. It caps wagering requirements applied to bonus funds at 10× and prohibits incentives that combine more than one gambling product type. The changes took effect on 19 January 2026; see the current LCCP condition and the Commission’s announcement.
For Great Britain, the Commission also says operators must show deposit and bonus balances separately, must not apply bonus wagering restrictions to play with the deposit balance, and must let players withdraw deposit funds while a bonus is active. Denmark
The Danish Gambling Authority says playthrough requirements may not exceed 10×, eligible games must contribute 100%, and prizes won while using a bonus may not be subject to a wagering requirement under Danish law. It also says a deposit-required promotion must match the deposit’s value. These are Danish conditions, not rules for every market (Danish Gambling Authority guidance).
South Africa: a dated operator example
Virgin Bet’s South Africa casino welcome offer, accessed 8 October 2026, advertises a 100% deposit match up to R3,000 for eligible new members physically located in South Africa. Its terms require a first deposit of R10–R3,000 within 14 days of sign-up and wagering 40× the bonus value within a 14-day bonus period. The page lists slots at 100% contribution, roulette and baccarat at 2%, blackjack at 10%, gameshows at 5%, and some named game groups at 0%. It says an early request to withdraw the initial deposit forfeits the bonus, while also stating that deposit balance and winnings are withdrawable during the offer subject to its terms. Checklist before accepting an offer
Read the operator’s primary terms before depositing. Check each of these points in the actual offer, not just the promotion headline:
- Jurisdiction and operator: Confirm that the offer is available where you are and that the operator is licensed to serve your location. The cited material does not verify any operator’s license status.
- Match and cap: Find the match percentage, qualifying deposit range and maximum bonus.
- Multiplier base: Confirm whether the requirement is based on bonus funds alone or deposit plus bonus, then calculate the total qualifying wagers.
- Eligible play: Check which games count, their contribution rates and any exclusions.
- Deadline and stakes: Look for the completion period, maximum bet and any maximum winnings or transfer limit.
- Withdrawal and cancellation: Learn what happens to bonus funds and related winnings if you withdraw, opt out or cancel. Check separately what happens to your deposited balance.
- Eligibility: Review new-customer rules, age and location limits, account restrictions, payment-method conditions and any other qualifying requirements.
Why the headline match is not enough
A larger match may come with a higher wagering base, restrictive game contributions, a short expiry or withdrawal conditions that matter more than the percentage. Compare the full terms rather than ranking offers by the advertised match. No market-wide statistic about how common these offers are, their typical wagering requirements or their outcomes is established by the cited sources, so a percentage alone cannot show whether an offer is favorable.
Gambling involves financial risk. A bonus does not make gambling risk-free or ensure a return.
