Usually, yes—but only for eligible U.S. consumer hardware bought directly from Apple. Apple generally provides a prepaid return label and free carrier pickup, or accepts the item at a U.S. Apple Store. The usual deadline is 14 calendar days after you receive the product. “Free” does not mean every purchase qualifies, that approval is automatic, that refunds are instant, or that a carrier contract disappears when you return an iPhone.
What “free Apple returns” actually covers
Return shipping
For an eligible online order, Apple’s process provides a return label and free carrier pickup. You can also take an eligible item to a U.S. Apple Store during the return window. See Apple’s shipping and delivery guidance.

Restocking fees
Apple’s published U.S. consumer retail policy does not list a general restocking fee for ordinary eligible retail returns. That is narrower than saying no fee can ever apply to a separate contract, business program, carrier transaction, or other sales channel. The controlling policy is Apple’s U.S. retail sales policy.
What “free” does not promise
- Acceptance after the deadline or for a damaged, incomplete, locked, or materially altered product.
- An immediate credit to your bank account.
- Cancellation of wireless service, financing, insurance, or promotional credits.
- A refund for excluded software, gift cards, developer products, or every digital purchase.
Apple’s standard 14-day rule
For ordinary products bought directly from Apple online or at an Apple Retail Store, the standard period is 14 calendar days from receipt, not generally 14 days from the order date. Apple’s returns and refunds page and retail policy set the applicable requirements.

The product normally needs to be in its original condition and include the accessories, cords, adapters, documentation, and packaging supplied with it. Keep the receipt or order information. Apple may inspect the item before approving a refund or exchange.
This article covers ordinary U.S. consumer Apple Store purchases. International, business, government, education, employee-purchase, lease, installment, and other specialized transactions can have different terms. Apple says a product can be returned only in the country where it was purchased.
How to return an Apple online order
Mail return
- Sign in to Apple’s Order Listing page.
- Select the order and item, then choose Start a Return.
- Select Get Started, confirm the items, and choose Initiate Your Return.
- Print the return label and any required hazardous-material label.
- Schedule the carrier pickup or take the package to the carrier location shown in the instructions.
- Keep the drop-off receipt and tracking number until the refund is posted.
Apple recommends the original packaging for computer returns. Photograph the product, serial number, and package contents before sealing the box.

Eligible online purchases can generally be taken to any U.S. Apple Store, subject to product-specific exceptions. Apple says the refund is processed at the store, while the time for the credit to appear depends on the payment method and financial institution.
Damaged or incorrect shipment
If an item arrives damaged or is not what you ordered, take it to a U.S. Apple Store or contact Apple Customer Service through the returns page.

Can you return an opened or used iPhone, iPad, or Mac?
Opening a box or testing a device is not described by Apple as an automatic disqualifier. The practical test is whether the product can be returned in the required original condition with its included parts and accessories.
- Back up your data, sign out of Apple services as appropriate, and erase the device.
- Disable Find My and Activation Lock. Apple may refuse a return if a security feature is enabled and the person possessing the product cannot disable it.
- Remove SIM cards and personal items.
- Include chargers, cables, adapters, documentation, and other supplied contents.
Heavy wear, accidental or liquid damage, engraving, missing parts, or other material changes can prevent a standard change-of-mind return. Apple’s inspection determines whether the policy requirements are met.

Products and purchases that need special treatment

Where the refund goes

Apple can require inspection before approving a refund. For retail returns that require inspection, Apple’s policy says an approved refund or exchange may be issued within 10 business days.
How long an Apple refund takes
- Transit: The package travels to Apple, which depends on the carrier and service.
- Receipt and inspection: Apple receives and evaluates the item when inspection is required.
- Refund initiation: Apple says card refunds are sent to the card-issuing bank within five business days after Apple receives the returned item or cancellation request.
- Bank posting: Your bank may need additional time to display the credit.
Thus, “free return” describes the shipping cost, not an instant refund guarantee.

Apple’s policy does not generally make Apple responsible for a product sold by another retailer, and Apple’s 14-day rule does not override that seller’s terms.

Apple warns that returning an iPhone or iPad may not cancel or reset the wireless account. You can receive an Apple hardware refund and still owe the carrier for installment payments, activation or upgrade fees, service, insurance, taxes, or reversed promotional credits.
Contact the carrier separately and obtain confirmation of service cancellation, financing treatment, promotional-credit treatment, and any remaining balance.
Digital purchases use a different refund process
App Store, iTunes Store, Apple Books, subscription, and other Apple-billed digital purchases are not handled through the hardware return policy. Apple says some purchases might be eligible, depending on country or region.
- Go to reportaproblem.apple.com and sign in with the Apple Account used for the purchase.
- Choose I’d like to, then Request a refund.
- Select a reason and the app, subscription, or other item.
- Submit the request.
Apple says to wait 24–48 hours for an update. Submission is not automatic approval. Pending charges generally cannot be requested through the normal process, an unpaid order may need to be paid first, and canceling a subscription is separate from requesting a refund. See Apple’s refund guidance.

Trade-ins can change the economics
Apple Trade In is separate from returning the new product. Apple says an online trade-in device generally must be received within 14 days after the new device arrives. Its online process generally takes two to three weeks, and credit processing can take three to five business days.
Apple can revise the trade-in value if the device’s actual condition differs from the description. You may accept or reject the revised value under the trade-in process; rejecting can involve returning the old device and charging the original trade-in value to the provided card.
If you bought a new device online with a trade-in and then return the new device, Apple says the trade-in may be canceled automatically in some cases, but it may not always be possible to recover the old device. Review Apple Trade In terms before sending it.

Do not assume that returning hardware resolves every related contract. Apple specifically warns that returning the AppleCare+ portion of an iPhone Upgrade Program transaction can cause loss of the Upgrade Option. AppleCare+ bought separately can have its own cancellation and refund terms, while coverage tied to financing or upgrade arrangements may affect upgrade rights. Check the applicable plan agreement.

Changed your mind about a MacBook
If it was bought directly from Apple, start the return within 14 calendar days, include the computer’s contents, use the prepaid label or an Apple Store, and retain tracking.

Opened and tested an iPhone
Opening and testing alone is not described as an automatic bar. Erase it, disable Find My and Activation Lock, and return all included items in acceptable condition.
Bought the iPhone from Verizon
Verizon’s return, installment, promotion, and service-cancellation rules control that transaction—not Apple’s direct-purchase policy.
Missing a charger or cable
Missing included items can undermine the original-condition requirement. Locate every component before shipping and document what you send.
Returning a gift
Use Apple’s gift-return process with the product or order information. An eligible gift return generally produces an Apple Gift Card, and Apple Gift Cards cannot themselves be returned.
Missed the 14-day deadline
Apple is not required by its standard policy to accept a late change-of-mind return. Ask Apple about available options, but do not treat warranty service or an exception as guaranteed.
Price adjustments may be an alternative to returning
Apple’s U.S. policy allows a price-adjustment request within 14 calendar days of an eligible price reduction, limited to 10 units of a particular product. Limited-time reductions and special sales events, such as Black Friday, are excluded. This can be useful when the product still meets your needs and only the price changed.
Pre-shipment checklist
- Confirm the receipt date and the 14-calendar-day deadline.
- Confirm the purchase was made directly from Apple and in the same country.
- Back up, sign out, erase, and disable Find My and Activation Lock.
- Remove SIM cards and personal items.
- Gather every accessory, cord, adapter, document, and piece of packaging.
- Photograph the device, serial number, and contents.
- Use Apple’s label and keep the carrier receipt and tracking number.
- Monitor the order status and the original payment method for the credit.
- Separately verify carrier service, financing, insurance, promotional credits, and any AppleCare+ or upgrade agreement.
