The airline also warned that schedule adjustments and delays could continue as it repositioned resources and added capacity. The update is historical: its travel waiver and passenger instructions applied only through Jan. 6, 2026.
Why Delta canceled flights—and when it planned to resume
Delta said it began canceling flights early Saturday, Jan. 3, 2026, to comply with FAA airspace closures in the Caribbean. The FAA indicated that the directive would expire early Sunday, Jan. 4. Delta therefore planned to restart service to and from the 13 affected airports, while cautioning that it might still adjust schedules as aircraft and other resources were repositioned. Delta’s Jan. 4 operations update did not explain why the FAA closed the airspace.
Delta described a plan to resume service, not a guarantee that every affected itinerary would operate as originally booked. The airline expected its normal Caribbean schedule on Jan. 4 but said adjustments could be necessary. On Jan. 4, it also announced additional Sunday flights and larger aircraft on some services.
What flights and airports were affected?
Delta listed 13 airports affected by the closure:
- ANU — Antigua
- AUA — Aruba
- BGI — Barbados
- BON — Bonaire
- CUR — Curaçao
- GND — Grenada
- SJU — San Juan
- SKB — St. Kitts
- STT — St. Thomas
- STX — St. Croix
- SVD — St. Vincent
- SXM — St. Maarten
- UVF — St. Lucia
Why cancellations or delays could continue after flights resumed
Lifting the closure allowed Delta to plan a return to service, but it did not instantly put aircraft, crews and customers back on their original schedules. Delta said it was repositioning resources and warned that schedule adjustments could be needed. It also said increased capacity could bring delays.

For Monday, Jan. 5, Delta said it would add more than 2,600 seats across its Caribbean network. That figure was Delta’s own operational estimate, not an independently measured industry total. The airline said its teams were working to reaccommodate affected customers by Tuesday, Jan. 6.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not confuse this with the FAA’s separate 2025 nationwide order
The Caribbean closure described by Delta was a January 2026 event affecting the listed airports. It was separate from an FAA emergency order announced in November 2025 that reduced flights nationwide. The FAA said that separate order would end Nov. 17, 2025, at 6 a.m., allowing normal operations to resume across the National Airspace System. The FAA attributed that decision to a decline in staffing-trigger events, reporting six on Nov. 14, eight on Nov. 15, one on Nov. 16, and a record 81 on Nov. 8. Those staffing figures and that order do not explain the January Caribbean closure.
