Delta Air Lines estimated on December 3, 2025, that the U.S. government shutdown would reduce its fourth-quarter pre-tax profit by about $200 million, or roughly 25 cents per share. That was a forecasted impact—not a $200 million net loss or the airline’s total quarterly loss. Delta’s January 2026 results later described a shutdown-related effect on revenue growth, but did not state a final shutdown-only dollar cost.
What did Delta mean by a $200 million “loss”?
The figure was Delta’s estimate of how much the shutdown would reduce fourth-quarter 2025 pre-tax profit. Delta also put the effect at about 25 cents per share. The estimate was announced after the shutdown ended, when the airline updated its outlook for the quarter. Delta’s December 3 estimate was not a report that it had lost $200 million overall.
Pre-tax profit is profit before taxes. It is distinct from revenue and from net income, which is calculated after taxes and other items. The $200 million figure therefore should not be read as a change in Delta’s total revenue, a net loss, or a final accounting of the shutdown’s effect.
Why did Delta expect its profit to fall?
The shutdown disrupted air travel through controller staffing pressures and flight reductions at major airports. The FAA’s flight-reduction order took effect November 7, 2025, during the 43-day shutdown, which began October 1 and ended November 12. Restrictions were fully lifted on November 16. The Associated Press reported that refunds increased significantly as bookings slowed. The Associated Press’s account of the disruption describes the timeline and its effects on travel.

Delta CEO Ed Bastian said bookings fell 5% to 10% immediately after the FAA-mandated cuts, but characterized the decline as short-lived, according to Reuters’ December 3 report. Bastian told investors, “I think we’re through it and it was transitory,” and said, “We’re looking forward to a strong December, a strong close to the year.” Reuters’ report on Delta’s estimate and bookings covered the booking decline; the Associated Press reported Bastian’s remarks. The AP report also described his comments about the shutdown’s temporary impact.
Did Delta ultimately lose $200 million?
Delta’s January 13, 2026 results said the shutdown affected December-quarter revenue growth by about 2 percentage points, largely in Domestic. That is a revenue-growth measure, not a separate confirmation of the earlier pre-tax profit estimate. The filing did not state a final dollar amount for the shutdown’s realized profit impact. Delta’s January 2026 results provide that later context.

The same results reported $1.3 billion in December-quarter non-GAAP pre-tax income and $5.0 billion in full-year 2025 non-GAAP pre-tax income. Those are company-wide figures and do not isolate the shutdown’s cost. They should not be used to calculate a final shutdown-only amount.
