Delta Air Lines and JetZero announced a partnership on March 5, 2025, to help develop JetZero’s blended-wing-body aircraft concept. Delta is contributing airline operations expertise and cabin-design advice; the announcement is not an aircraft order or a launch of passenger service. JetZero is building a full-scale demonstrator with Scaled Composites and targets its first flight in 2027, but no commercial service date has been established.
What Delta and JetZero announced
Delta said it would work with JetZero to advance the concept toward commercial viability, drawing on operational expertise through its Sustainable Skies Lab and consulting on the passenger and employee experience. Delta said the companies had worked informally together since 2021 on commercialization planning associated with a grant application. The U.S. Air Force grant was received in 2023 to help facilitate a full-scale demonstrator, according to Delta’s March 5, 2025 announcement.
The formal partnership is a development relationship, not a disclosed purchase commitment. Delta has not announced that it has ordered the aircraft or that it will put the type on scheduled routes.
What is a blended-wing-body aircraft?
A blended-wing-body (BWB) aircraft combines the central body and wings into a broad lifting structure, rather than using the familiar narrow tube-shaped fuselage with wings attached. Delta describes the proposed shape as offering more lifting surface, a more even distribution of lift and load, less drag, and lower structural weight. The companies say the design can use existing engine technology.
#1 Best Overall
- High-quality 1:200-scale plastic model
- Simple snap-fit design
- Authentic markings
- Wingspan (folded): 12.5 in, Height (on gear/ground): 3.5 in, Height (with stand): 7.5 in
- Recommended for ages 14 and up
Those are design rationales and projected advantages, not measured results from a commercial JetZero aircraft. JetZero’s concept is still in development.
How much more fuel-efficient could it be?
Delta and JetZero say the BWB could be up to 50% more fuel-efficient than current-generation mid-range tube-and-wing aircraft, using fuel per available seat mile as the comparison. This is a company projection, not independently validated operating performance. It should not be read as a guaranteed saving on a particular route or as a forecast of ticket prices.
Rank #2
- High-quality 1:200-scale plastic model
- Simple snap-fit design
- Authentic markings
- The model measures 7"H x 12"L x 15.25"W
- Recommended age is 14 and up
Delta’s reported fleet figures are separate from that JetZero projection. Delta says its fleet-wide fuel-efficiency improvement was 6.4% as of 2025. It also reports that 38 next-generation aircraft delivered in 2025 were, on average, 27% more fuel-efficient per seat mile than the aircraft Delta had retired since 2019. These figures describe Delta’s fleet and its stated comparison, not the performance of JetZero’s proposed aircraft; see Delta’s 2025 sustainability progress update.
What capacity and range are being discussed?
Delta has described the concept as potentially carrying more than 250 passengers, with range and seating capacity comparable to mid-market aircraft. That is a concept-level description, not a published final cabin configuration or a confirmed aircraft specification. The company materials do not establish the eventual number of seats, cabin classes, or route network.

What might the cabin be like?
Delta says it will advise on interior design, with possible features including dedicated overhead-bin space for each passenger, accessible seating and lavatories, and fewer rows. These are examples under consideration, not promised features or finalized specifications. The broad airframe shape may create different design opportunities, but the available company statements do not set out a finished cabin plan.

JetZero’s current progress page says the company is in the demonstration phase, fabricating its Jet1 demonstrator with Scaled Composites, a Northrop Grumman subsidiary. The page targets the demonstrator’s first full-scale flight in 2027. A target for a test aircraft is not a commercial passenger-service date.

JetZero also says its Pathfinder program has built and flown five generations of scaled aircraft across more than 30 flights. The company says its most recent flights validate the configuration and control laws for the full-size demonstrator. What is still unknown?
- Commercial entry into service: The reviewed official announcements provide no confirmed date for passenger operations.
- Certification schedule: No certification milestones or schedule are specified in the cited company materials.
- Final capacity and cabin: The potential capacity and cabin features remain concept descriptions, not final specifications.
- Verified operating performance: The projected fuel-efficiency and noise benefits have not been established here as in-service results. Delta attributes expected lower noise partly to engines mounted on top of the aircraft, but no measured JetZero noise result is reported.
