Delta Air Lines Turned 100 in 2025—Not 2026

Delta Air Lines marked its centennial in 2025. Its founding date and the start of passenger service are separate milestones.

Delta Air Lines’ centennial was in 2025, not 2026. The airline says it was the first U.S. airline to reach 100 years; its 2025 celebration included a gala, commemorative aircraft livery and other centennial keepsakes. The supplied evidence does not identify a separate history-making event for Delta in 2026.

When did Delta Air Lines turn 100?

Delta traces its founding to Huff Daland Dusters, an aerial crop-dusting company incorporated on March 2, 1925. That makes 2025 the company’s centennial year. Delta’s centennial page describes it as “the first and only US airline to reach 100 years” (Delta, “Fueling Our Future”). The claim is Delta’s own characterization; the evidence here does not provide an independent comparison of every U.S. airline.

Founding and passenger service are different milestones

The 1925 incorporation date marks the company’s origins, not the beginning of passenger flights. A proclamation from the Office of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz says Delta Air Service’s first flights began four years after incorporation (“Delta Air Lines Day” proclamation). The distinction matters when dating the airline: its corporate roots reach back to 1925, while passenger service began later.

How Delta marked its centennial

Delta held its centennial gala on March 15, 2025, and revealed a commemorative aircraft livery as part of the anniversary program (Delta, “Centennial Overview”). The company’s centennial materials also describe a 45-minute documentary, museum exhibits, merchandise and commemorative trading cards.

For readers interested in the airline’s history, Delta’s media kit lists Delta: 100 Years & Climbing, a decade-by-decade coffee-table book published by Assouline and authored by Mark Ellwood (Delta News Hub, “Delta’s Centennial” media kit). Delta also describes a centennial-themed aircraft trading-card collection (Delta, “Centennial Overview”). Availability and current pricing are not established here.

What the 2026 headline does—and does not—establish

The centennial facts explain why a headline about Delta making history in 2026 may be misdated: the milestone documented here happened in 2025. Delta’s 2026 CEO letter is among the company materials reviewed, but the evidence does not tie it to a specific new 2026 history-making event. Without a clearly identified event, a stronger 2026 claim would be misleading.
