Delta Air Lines’ Numbered Boarding Groups: What Changed and What Travelers Need to Know

Delta’s numbered boarding groups were intended to make it clearer when to line up—not to change who boards first. Here’s how current zones and priority guidance apply.

Delta’s reported boarding change replaced named groups with numbered groups one through eight to make it clearer when passengers should line up. It did not change the reported order in which customer categories board. The numbers are a new label for the boarding sequence—not evidence that Delta introduced a new gate device or proved faster boarding.

What is Delta’s new boarding process?

In April 2024, the Associated Press reported that Delta planned to replace named boarding groups—such as Diamond Medallions, Delta Premium Select and Sky Priority—with numbered groups one through eight. Delta CEO Ed Bastian described the purpose as making the cue to line up easier to recognize: “When you have a number and you’re standing in line, we are all trained to know when it’s our turn.” (Associated Press, April 2024)

The reported change concerned the group convention passengers see and hear, not a newly introduced physical gate system. The available report describes the intended improvement in clarity; it does not establish that Delta measured shorter boarding times or better operational performance.

Did Delta change who boards first?

No change to the boarding hierarchy was reported. AP said Delta was changing the names to numbers while keeping the order for customer categories intact; Basic Economy passengers would still board last under the terminology used in that 2024 report. The distinction matters: a group’s label can change without changing the priority customers receive.

That is separate from Delta’s 2019 explanation for renaming boarding zones to reflect the branded fare customers purchased while continuing to prioritize loyalty. At the time, Delta said having more groups could reduce the number of passengers lining up simultaneously and ease crowding near gates. That older explanation describes the earlier branded-zone change, not the later switch to numbered labels or a complete current boarding order. (Delta, 2019)

What does my Delta boarding zone mean?

Your zone is the boarding cue assigned to your trip; it is not, by itself, a complete explanation of every benefit or eligibility rule. Delta’s current fare terminology provides one concrete example: for flights originating in the U.S. and Canada on or after October 1, 2025, Delta Main Basic replaced the Basic Economy name, and Delta lists that fare with Zone 8 boarding priority. Delta also says Sky Priority customers in Zones 1–4 may use the Sky Priority boarding lane. Its eligible categories include Diamond, Platinum and Gold Medallion members; SkyTeam Elite Plus members; and travelers in Delta One, Delta Premium Select or Delta First. The airline also lists eligible Delta SkyMiles American Express card members for priority boarding, but that guidance alone does not establish which specific cards currently qualify. (Delta Sky Priority guidance)

These examples do not establish the full current sequence for every zone or traveler. Priority eligibility can depend on fare, cabin, loyalty status, partner status or a qualifying card, and some Sky Priority services—such as expedited security—are not available at every location. Delta says benefits can change, so use its live guidance for current eligibility details.

How do I check my boarding group?

  1. Open your trip in the Fly Delta app. Delta lists a digital boarding pass, boarding-zone and seat-assignment updates, offline boarding-pass access and airport maps among the app’s features. (Fly Delta app features)
  2. Read the zone on your boarding pass. Use the zone displayed for that specific trip as your cue for when to line up.
  3. Check Delta’s current eligibility guidance if you expect priority boarding. Confirm that your fare, status, partner membership or qualifying card meets the applicable terms.

The app helps you see trip information; Delta’s app feature page does not say that using it changes your boarding priority.
