Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteNeither Dell nor HP was better for every buyer in 2024. HP generally had the edge for premium consumer versatility—especially convertible laptops with touch and OLED options—while Dell offered broad business, workstation and gaming lines, plus a compact XPS option for travelers. The useful comparison is between specific models and configurations, not brand names alone.
This is a historical comparison of laptops sold in 2024, including Dell’s XPS 13 9340 generation and HP’s 2024 Spectre x360 14. Their successors, current prices and availability may differ.

Quick verdict: Dell or HP for which buyer?
| Priority | Better starting point | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Premium 2-in-1, touchscreen or pen use | HP | Spectre x360 against Dell’s convertible models; check the exact panel and included pen. |
| Small premium travel laptop | Dell | XPS 13 against a similarly sized HP clamshell; compare weight, battery and ports. |
| Business fleet | No brand-wide winner | Latitude against EliteBook, including management, security, warranty and service terms. |
| Gaming | No brand-wide winner | Alienware or Dell G against OMEN or Victus, model by model. |
| Mobile workstation | No brand-wide winner | Precision against ZBook for the required software, graphics and sustained workload. |
| Lowest-cost everyday laptop | Whichever has the stronger sale configuration | RAM, screen, SSD and warranty matter more than the logo. |
| Support and warranty | Depends on region and plan | Read the coverage for the exact SKU and seller before purchase. |
These are directions for narrowing a search, not guarantees about every product in a family. A budget Pavilion is not a fair stand-in for a Spectre, just as an Alienware gaming laptop does not represent an Inspiron.

HP was simplifying and changing laptop naming in 2024, so a family name alone may not identify a model’s generation or specification. Check the full model number and release generation; PCWorld’s comparison also notes the naming changes and the value of model-level comparisons.
What Dell offered in 2024
XPS: premium, minimalist laptops
Dell’s 2024 XPS range included the XPS 13, 14 and 16. The redesigned lineup featured Intel Core Ultra options, with NVIDIA RTX graphics available in larger models. Dell’s 2024 XPS announcement describes the lineup and its positioning.
The XPS approach favored thin bezels and a streamlined exterior. On 2024 models, that also meant a touch-based function row and limited physical ports, choices some users liked for their clean look and others found less convenient. Check the exact configuration: processor, display, graphics and ports vary.

Inspiron covered a broad range of conventional laptops and convertibles. Compare its exact screen, memory and processor rather than assuming all Inspirons share the same build or performance.
Latitude and Precision: business and professional work
Latitude is Dell’s business line, where fleet management, security, docking and service options may matter more than consumer styling. Precision is aimed at professional workloads that may need workstation-class performance or certified hardware. Confirm that the particular application requires those features before paying for them.
Alienware and Dell G: gaming
These are Dell’s gaming-focused families. A gaming laptop’s real performance depends on the graphics processor and its power limit, cooling, screen and chassis—not simply on its brand or GPU name.

What HP offered in 2024
Spectre x360: premium convertible
Spectre x360 laptops paired a 360-degree hinge with touch and pen-oriented use, with OLED options on some configurations. That flexibility can suit note-taking, drawing and media viewing, but it can add weight and cost compared with a conventional clamshell. HP’s 2024 Spectre x360 14 product sheet documents configurations including Intel Core Ultra 7 155H and physical specifications; it does not make every specification universal across regions or SKUs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesEnvy, Pavilion and HP Laptop: consumer alternatives
Envy sat below Spectre as a more affordable premium range, while Pavilion and HP Laptop covered mainstream and budget needs. Quality and features vary substantially by configuration, so inspect the specific display, memory, storage and warranty.
EliteBook and ProBook: business
EliteBook is HP’s higher-end business line; ProBook targets business buyers at a lower tier. For company purchases, assess the service contract, management and security features, ports and deployment needs alongside the laptop itself.
ZBook, OMEN and Victus
ZBook is HP’s mobile workstation family. OMEN and Victus cover gaming at different price and performance levels. As with Dell, cooling, graphics power, screen quality and upgrade access make individual-model comparisons essential.
2024 premium head-to-head: XPS 13 9340 vs. Spectre x360 14
This is a useful concrete comparison, not a verdict on either entire brand. The Dell XPS 13 9340 was a compact conventional ultraportable; the HP Spectre x360 14 added a convertible design. A direct RTINGS comparison judged the 2024 Spectre x360 14 superior overall to the 2024 XPS 13. That result applies to those two tested models, not every Dell and HP laptop.

| Decision point | Dell XPS 13 9340 | HP Spectre x360 14 (2024) |
|---|---|---|
| Form | Conventional compact laptop; not a 360-degree convertible | Convertible with touch and pen-oriented use |
| Configuration evidence | Dell listed Intel Core Ultra 5 and Core Ultra 7 options and a 13.4-inch display, including FHD+ non-touch configurations; verify the specific SKU on the XPS 13 9340 product page. | HP’s product sheet documents Intel Core Ultra 7 155H configurations and physical specifications; panel and other details depend on SKU and region. |
| Best fit | Travel and conventional laptop productivity for someone who values a minimalist, compact design | Tablet, tent or presentation use; touch, pen and premium-display preferences |
| Trade-offs | Limited physical ports; touch function row may not suit everyone; thinness can constrain upgrades and repair | Typically heavier than a small XPS 13; convertible and OLED features can raise cost, and do not guarantee longer battery life |
Choose the XPS 13 if portability and a conventional clamshell matter more than tablet mode. Choose the Spectre x360 if you will actually use the hinge, touch or pen. A more capable feature set is not automatically better value if those features go unused.

What to compare before choosing
Display: inspect the exact panel
Resolution labels alone do not tell you whether a screen will suit your work. Compare resolution, brightness, color coverage, refresh rate, aspect ratio, finish and touch support. A 1920×1200 or FHD+ panel, a higher-resolution 2.5K or 3K panel and an OLED panel serve different priorities. A taller aspect ratio can provide more vertical workspace; a glossy finish may be harder to use in bright surroundings than matte.
OLED can deliver deep blacks and vivid color, but glare, possible battery impact and burn-in concerns are relevant trade-offs. If you are sensitive to flicker, look for model-specific testing rather than assuming all OLED panels behave alike. Review configurations may use a better panel than the base SKU, so verify the panel listed for the model you are buying.
Performance: identify the chip and workload
“Core i5,” “Core i7” and “Core Ultra” are not enough to predict performance. Check the processor’s full model and generation, the cooling design, memory and graphics. Short benchmark results may not reflect sustained performance during long renders or gaming: a thin ultraportable can be excellent for office work without being the right machine for extended heavy loads.
- For everyday work, prioritize enough memory and a responsive SSD before paying extra for a higher processor tier you will not use.
- For gaming or 3D work, check the discrete GPU, its power limit, cooling and screen—not just the GPU family name.
- For professional software, confirm whether the application benefits from certified workstation hardware or a specific graphics capability.
- Do not treat 2024 AI or NPU marketing as proof of faster everyday use; benefits depend on software support and the task.
RAM and storage: avoid an expensive dead end
Some thin laptops have soldered memory that cannot be upgraded. Confirm whether RAM is replaceable before buying, and consider 16GB rather than 8GB if the laptop is not upgradeable and you expect to keep it for several years. Check SSD capacity and whether it can be replaced; do not assume all models in one family share the same access or upgrade options.
Battery life: compare like with like
Battery results are meaningful only when test conditions are comparable. Screen resolution and OLED use, brightness, processor, battery capacity, Windows power mode, browser or video workload and background software all affect runtime. There is no sound brand-wide conclusion from comparing one XPS, Spectre, Envy or business configuration with another under different conditions.
Keyboard, touchpad and daily ergonomics
Try the layout if possible. Dell’s minimalist XPS controls, including the touch function row on 2024 models, will suit some users and frustrate others who rely on tactile keys. Compare key spacing and travel, touchpad type, hinge stability, webcam and any IR camera for Windows Hello. Also include laptop weight and charger size in a travel decision.

Ports and wireless
Count the connections you use now: USB-C or Thunderbolt, USB-A, HDMI, headphone jack, card reader and wired networking. A very thin laptop may require a hub or dock for everyday peripherals, adding expense and something else to carry. For business models, check docking compatibility and whether cellular connectivity is offered on the exact configuration; Wi-Fi generation also varies by model.

Build, durability and repairability
Metal construction can feel premium, but it does not by itself establish long-term reliability. Assess rigidity, hinge design, thermals, service access and parts availability separately. Treat durability certifications or MIL-STD claims as claims about the tested product and conditions, not a promise that every unit will survive every environment. Confirm whether memory, SSD and wireless components are replaceable on the model you intend to buy.
Security, software and support
For personal use, features such as an IR camera may be convenient. For a company, evaluate security controls, fleet management, operating-system edition and procurement support against the organization’s requirements. Consumer and enterprise service arrangements are not interchangeable.
Dell and HP support depend on country, product and plan; neither brand can be declared universally better on service from the information available here. Review the warranty length, accidental-damage coverage, mail-in or on-site repair, service tier and regional limitations for the exact configuration and seller. HP’s US computer support page provides warranty-status checking and troubleshooting resources.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Price and value: normalize the configuration
List prices are poor evidence of which brand is cheaper. Both companies discount laptops; retailers may sell exclusive configurations, older models may overlap with new generations, and a low “starting at” price may describe a panel or memory configuration you would not choose. A historical Dell storefront signal is not a current or directly comparable price, and no reliable equivalent 2024 Spectre price is established here.

Which one makes sense for your situation?
Students and note-takers
Consider an HP Spectre x360 or Envy x360 if you will use touch, a pen or tablet mode for notes. If you need only a standard laptop for documents and browsing, compare sale-priced Inspiron, Pavilion or HP Laptop configurations on memory, display and warranty instead.
Travelers and office workers
The XPS 13 can suit someone prioritizing a small premium clamshell. Balance its compact design against the ports and tactile controls you need. Also consider selected HP clamshells and business models; weight, battery testing, charger and connectivity matter more than brand loyalty.
Creators
For photo, video or design work, compare color coverage, brightness, resolution, memory, graphics and sustained performance. A Spectre OLED may suit display-focused work, but do not choose from the family name alone or assume OLED is the right trade-off for every workflow.
Business departments
Compare Dell Latitude with HP EliteBook, or Precision with ZBook where workstation requirements apply. Include security, fleet deployment, docking, service levels, repair processes and procurement terms in the evaluation—not just the employee-facing specifications.
Gamers
Compare Alienware or Dell G with OMEN or Victus at the same GPU power, screen class, cooling and memory level. Gaming systems are usually poor choices for frequent travel because of their weight, fan noise and larger chargers.
Budget shoppers
Buy the strongest exact configuration within budget, not the most familiar badge. A brighter screen, adequate RAM and a reasonable warranty can matter more in daily use than a small processor-tier difference.
Buying checklist for a 2024 model
- Record the complete model and SKU, not just “XPS,” “Spectre” or “Pavilion.”
- Confirm the processor generation and full model number.
- Check RAM capacity and whether it can be upgraded.
- Verify SSD capacity and serviceability.
- Read the exact display specification, including brightness, resolution, finish and touch support.
- For gaming or workstation use, confirm GPU model, power limit and cooling design.
- Check battery capacity and look for comparable test conditions.
- Count the ports you need and price any hub or dock.
- Read warranty, accidental-damage and return terms for your region and seller.
- Compare current prices only after matching the specifications and coverage.
Because this is a 2024 comparison, storefronts may now emphasize successor products or show different availability. Dell’s current XPS range is useful for present-day shopping, but it should not be mistaken for proof of 2024 pricing or specifications. For current HP models, start at the HP US laptop store and verify model generation. If neither lineup fits, a ThinkPad, MacBook Air, Zenbook, Surface Laptop or Chromebook may suit particular workloads better; alternatives still need the same configuration-level scrutiny.
