Dell Says Consumers Aren’t Buying PCs “Based on AI”—But It Isn’t Abandoning AI PCs

Dell’s CES 2026 remarks signal a change in consumer marketing, not an end to AI-capable PCs. Here’s how to judge whether an NPU matters for your next laptop.

Dell says its consumer messaging is no longer “AI-first”: buyers are not choosing new PCs because of AI, according to the company’s head of product. That does not mean Dell is removing AI hardware. Its CES 2026 comments point to a change in how the company sells PCs—not a decision to stop building systems with neural processing units (NPUs).

What Dell’s executives said at CES 2026

At a briefing connected with CES in January 2026, Dell head of product Kevin Terwilliger said the company’s new-product message was no longer “AI-first.” He said consumers were “not buying based on AI” and that AI could confuse people instead of making a computer’s practical benefits clearer. Those are his observations about Dell’s customers, not results from a published consumer survey. PC Gamer’s CES coverage reports the remarks.

Dell COO and vice chairman Jeff Clarke separately called AI an “un-met promise” for the PC market, referring to the company’s expectation that AI would stimulate end-user demand more strongly. Clarke’s comment describes Dell’s expectations; it does not establish that AI PCs are failing to sell.

Dell is changing its pitch, not removing AI hardware

Terwilliger said the systems Dell announced at the briefing still included NPUs. The distinction is between putting AI-capable components in a PC and making AI the lead reason to buy it. Dell’s reported position is that the hardware can remain part of its products while marketing puts more emphasis on outcomes shoppers can recognize.

Coverage of the presentation also noted the return of the XPS name and new XPS and Alienware products. That product activity is useful context, but it does not show that Dell changed those product decisions because of its AI comments. Tom’s Guide’s coverage discusses the presentation and Terwilliger’s remarks.

What “AI PC” means—and what it does not

An AI PC is a broad industry label generally used for a computer whose processor includes an NPU, a component designed to accelerate certain AI tasks on the device. A neural processing unit is distinct from a CPU or GPU; having one does not automatically make every AI app run faster. The benefit depends on whether the software supports the NPU and whether the user has a workload that can use it.

Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC label is narrower than the general AI PC term: it identifies PCs that meet Microsoft’s requirements for a specific set of hardware and software capabilities. Those requirements can change, so buyers should check Microsoft’s current Windows 11 specifications for the model and features they are considering rather than relying on the label alone.

Cloud-based services such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and web-based Copilot do not inherently require a new NPU-equipped computer. Conversely, not having an NPU does not mean a computer cannot run AI software: some workloads can use a GPU, and many services run remotely.

Why an AI label may not persuade someone to upgrade

Dell did not publish evidence explaining why consumers are not buying based on AI. The following are plausible reasons the label may not be a strong standalone sales pitch, rather than findings demonstrated by the company’s remarks:

  • The benefit can be hard to picture. “NPU” and performance figures such as TOPS describe hardware, not a clear everyday outcome.
  • Many familiar AI tools work in a browser. A person may use cloud services on a computer they already own.
  • PCs are replaced slowly. If a machine still handles work, school, or entertainment, a new processor feature may not be enough to justify the cost.
  • Support varies by software. Local transcription, camera effects, audio processing, image tools, and generative-AI features depend on particular apps, languages, regions, and hardware.
  • Privacy expectations differ. Local processing may reduce reliance on cloud services for some tasks, but “on-device” does not guarantee that every feature works offline or keeps all data private.
  • The headline feature can distract from the rest of the purchase. Memory, storage, screen quality, keyboard, ports, repairability, support, and price remain important regardless of AI branding.

What the market evidence does—and does not—show

Dell’s comments are evidence of its own assessment of consumer demand, not a count of AI-PC sales or a survey of all PC buyers. They do not establish Dell’s sell-through rate, industry shipment growth, or whether business customers value AI PCs for different reasons. Buyers might also choose an AI-capable system for battery life or performance without considering its AI label.

Gartner forecast that rising memory costs would delay the projected 50% AI-PC market-penetration milestone until 2028. That is a forecast about penetration in the context of pricing pressure, not a measurement of why individual consumers buy computers. Gartner’s February 2026 forecast also discusses expected shipment pressure. Dell’s investor materials described a consumer market under pressure and PC refresh activity behind prior cycles, but do not isolate AI as the cause. Dell’s investor materials provide that broader business context.

Memory costs and component availability can affect PC prices and purchase timing. Higher costs may make shoppers less willing to pay for incremental features, but the evidence cited here does not establish that AI demand caused higher PC prices or that consumers are rejecting AI PCs for that reason.

When an AI PC could be worth paying for

An NPU can be a meaningful advantage when a buyer has a particular, supported task that benefits from local acceleration. Before paying extra, confirm that the software, operating system, and hardware support the exact feature, and that it works in the buyer’s region and language.

  • Video calls and audio: Supported camera effects, noise reduction, or audio processing may be useful for frequent meetings.
  • Transcription and accessibility: Local speech or captioning functions can matter to people whose work or access needs depend on them.
  • Creative work: AI-assisted photo or video features may help, but application compatibility, GPU capability, memory, storage, and codecs can matter more.
  • Privacy-sensitive tasks: Local processing can reduce cloud dependence for some workloads; check how the specific feature handles data and whether it operates offline.
  • Long ownership plans: A buyer keeping a laptop for several years may value having an NPU if future software makes more use of it, while recognizing that future benefits are not guaranteed.

For business fleets, IT administrators may weigh security, manageability, battery life, and lifecycle support even when individual employees do not care about AI features. Linux buyers should check the specific system’s driver and framework support, which may differ from Windows integration.

When the AI label is a weak reason to spend more

  • The main uses are browsing, email, office documents, streaming, and cloud AI services, and the current computer handles them well.
  • The advertised AI features are vague, limited to an app the buyer will not use, or unavailable in the buyer’s language or region.
  • The price premium comes at the expense of more useful memory, storage, display quality, ports, repairability, or warranty coverage.
  • The buyer cannot tell whether a feature runs locally, requires an internet connection, or sends information to a cloud service.
  • The computer is being replaced solely because its packaging says “AI,” rather than because it solves a real problem.

For gaming, prioritize the GPU, CPU, cooling, display refresh rate, and upgrade options. A powerful GPU may already support some AI workloads without an NPU. For Windows users, the end of support for Windows 10 does not itself require buying an AI PC: a compatible Windows 11 system without an NPU may still meet a buyer’s needs.

What to compare before buying a laptop

Start with the reason for replacing the current computer: it may be too slow, have poor battery life, lack storage or memory, fail to run required software, or no longer meet needs for portability, graphics, connectivity, or display quality. A damaged machine or a scheduled school or business refresh can also make replacement necessary. Compare actual configurations rather than treating AI PC as a quality tier.

  • Performance: Check CPU and, for gaming or creative work, GPU performance against the applications you use.
  • Battery and thermals: Look for credible testing of the specific model; a processor’s AI capability alone does not guarantee longer battery life or quieter operation.
  • Memory and storage: Choose capacity that fits your workload and expected ownership period.
  • Screen, keyboard, and ports: Confirm the size, resolution, brightness, refresh rate, typing feel, and connections you need.
  • Software and support: Verify operating-system compatibility, application support, warranty, repair options, and security updates.
  • Total price: Compare like-for-like configurations, including memory, SSD, processor, display, operating system, and warranty.
  • AI capability: Identify the specific local feature you expect to use, then confirm its software support and whether it justifies any price difference.
