Dell Said “Return to the Office or Else”—Nearly Half of U.S. Workers Chose “Or Else”

A June 2024 report said close to half of Dell’s full-time U.S. workers chose remote status over a hybrid schedule, accepting reported limits on promotions and role changes.

In a June 20, 2024 report based on internal company data, Business Insider said close to 50% of Dell’s full-time U.S. workforce chose to remain remote rather than take the company’s hybrid option. The choice came with a career trade-off: remote-classified employees were reportedly ineligible for promotions or role changes.

What did Dell ask employees to choose?

Business Insider reported that Dell asked employees to classify themselves as remote or hybrid. Under the reported policy terms, hybrid workers were expected to work from a Dell office 39 days per quarter. That was the stated attendance expectation, not a report of how many days employees actually attended.

Remote workers could continue working remotely but, according to the report, could not receive promotions or move into other roles. In that sense, “or else” meant accepting a limitation on career mobility rather than switching to the hybrid schedule; it did not mean that nearly half the workforce resigned.

How many workers chose to stay remote?

Business Insider’s June 2024 report put the share at close to 50% of Dell’s full-time U.S. workforce. It separately reported that about one-third of Dell’s international staff chose remote status. These are distinct populations and reported figures from an internal-data snapshot, not audited workforce statistics or a measure of Dell’s workforce today.

Why did some employees prefer remote status?

Business Insider and Ars Technica described reasons given by employees they interviewed. Those accounts illustrate individual considerations; they do not establish how common each reason was across Dell.

  • Household costs: One unnamed Dell employee told Business Insider that commuting to the office would leave “a huge hole in our budget” given their salary. This is one worker’s account, not a measured estimate of employees’ expenses.
  • Time and convenience: Ars Technica reported that interviewees valued the time and expense saved by staying home.
  • Office access: Some interviewees said their local offices had closed, making the hybrid expectation harder to meet.
  • Career priorities: Some employees said they were not seeking promotions, making the remote classification’s reported career restriction less costly to them.
  • How teams worked: Some interviewees said their teammates were spread across locations and that meetings still took place by video. One described offices as mostly empty while employees joined calls remotely.

What was Dell’s stated reason for the policy?

Dell told Business Insider: “We believe in-person connections paired with a flexible approach are critical to drive innovation and value differentiation.” Business Insider published that statement on June 20, 2024, without naming an individual speaker.

Did Dell later change its office requirements?

Ars Technica reported in September 2024 that Dell imposed a five-day on-site requirement on its sales team. That was a department-specific development; it does not establish that the same requirement applied to every Dell employee or became the company-wide policy.

Does this describe Dell’s policy today?

No current company-wide policy can be established from these 2024 reports. The workforce proportions and remote-versus-hybrid terms above describe reporting published in June 2024, and the sales-team change was reported later that year. They should not be read as a statement of Dell’s policy in 2026.

For anyone assessing an employer’s office policy, the reported Dell experience points to practical questions worth checking directly: how many office days are required and tracked, whether remote status affects promotions or internal moves, what commuting costs look like, whether a suitable local office exists, and whether the team is co-located enough for in-person attendance to change how it works.
