These are two separate labor stories with different timelines: the UAW reported that Deere workers rejected an agreement extension in August 2026 while 1,600 remained laid off, and Cargill Dunlop workers in Guelph, Ontario, ended their 2024 strike after ratifying a new agreement. The Guelph stoppage is over; it should not be confused with a separate Cargill bargaining unit in High River, Alberta.
What happened at Deere?
On August 23, 2026, the United Auto Workers said Deere members rejected a proposed extension of their agreement through 2029. The union said the agreement would return to negotiations in 2027. In its announcement, the UAW reported that 1,600 workers were still laid off. That is the union’s reported figure, not an independently confirmed company count.
UAW President Shawn Fain said: “The company failed to make an offer that addressed the issues weighing on the minds of our members, especially job security. We’ll see Deere at the table in 2027.” The statement reflects the union’s position on the proposal and members’ concerns.
How Deere’s reported results fit in
Deere & Company reported net income of $1.379 billion for the third quarter ended August 2, 2026, compared with $1.289 billion in the comparable 2025 quarter, according to its August 20, 2026 earnings release. Those company-reported results provide financial context, but do not establish why workers were laid off or settle the job-security concerns raised by the UAW.

Did Cargill workers in Guelph end their strike?
Yes. The strike at Cargill Dunlop in Guelph, Ontario, began May 27, 2024, and ended when about 960 UFCW Local 175 members ratified an agreement on July 6, 2024. UFCW Canada described it as a 41-day strike. The union accounts of the stoppage and ratification are available from UFCW Canada and UFCW International.
What the ratified agreement included
UFCW International said the agreement provided $3.75 per hour in wage increases over its term, including $2 per hour in the first year, plus a $500 lump-sum renewal incentive. These are terms reported by the union for the Guelph settlement.

Is the separate Cargill unit in High River on strike?
The available listing does not establish a strike there. A Government of Canada Labour Program listing published May 31, 2026 identifies a separate Cargill Foods Division bargaining unit in High River, Alberta, with 1,913 employees and an agreement expiry date of December 31, 2026. The federal expiring collective-agreement listing does not say that bargaining has stalled or that a stoppage has begun. This is not the Guelph Dunlop unit whose 2024 strike ended after ratification.
