Irish construction professional Declan White arrived in Australia in 2008 expecting a year of backpacking. Two years later, after working on construction projects in Western Australia, he established Monford Group. In June 2014, the company was named Telstra Western Australian Business of the Year. That award marks a notable point in Monford’s early growth—not evidence of its present-day size or performance.
From Wexford to Western Australia
White was from Wexford and graduated from Limerick Institute of Technology. The Irish Independent and The Irish Times report that he arrived in Australia in 2008. The Irish Independent says he worked his way from carpenter to supervisor and project manager before starting Monford in 2010.
A 2014 PerthNow profile describes the move as a working-holiday trip after Ireland’s Global Financial Crisis. White took construction jobs in Western Australia, including in Karratha. He told PerthNow: “I was working in Karratha on an oil and gas project and saw an opportunity for a more efficient contractor.”
White was not claiming that the market lacked contractors. In the same interview, he said: “It wasn’t really a gap, every man and his dog was doing it, we just thought we could do it better.” Those comments explain his rationale for starting the business; they are his assessment, not independent evidence that Monford outperformed competitors.

How Monford’s early business took shape
A company-hosted retrospective published for Monford’s ten-year milestone says the business began with a minor concrete contract in Karratha in 2010. It describes later work across resources, infrastructure and energy. White recalled that being on the ground for early oil and gas projects helped him understand the opportunity for “a more efficient, client-focussed contractor.” The retrospective is a Construction Contractors Federation WA member profile hosted by Monford.
Contemporary reporting in 2014 described Monford’s services as supporting mine sites, gas and power facilities, pipelines, haulage, plant and equipment, and labour hire. Period examples included work connected with the Public Transport Authority’s Perth City Rail Alliance and Chevron’s Wheatstone LNG project, according to The West Australian. These examples describe the company’s reported activity at that time, not a verified current project portfolio or capability list.

The 2014 award and what it says
In June 2014, Monford was named Telstra Western Australian Business of the Year. The award was reported by PerthNow, The West Australian and the Irish Independent. The Irish Independent said White would progress to the national awards; the available reporting does not establish the outcome at that next stage.
The PerthNow profile records White’s emphasis on having a defined growth plan and his view that the market was becoming tougher. Those remarks belong to the company’s 2014 context. The award is evidence of recognition at that time, not by itself proof of later profitability, project quality or current market position.

Reported workforce: dated snapshots, not a current count
Press reports from 2014 gave slightly different workforce snapshots: PerthNow’s 13 July profile said Monford had almost 200 people, while its 25 June award report described a 180-strong workforce. The Monford-hosted decade retrospective later reported a 600-strong workforce at the ten-year milestone. The retrospective’s exact publication date is not confirmed in the available record, and the figure should be read as a company-hosted historical statement.
| Period and source | Reported workforce | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 25 June 2014, PerthNow award report | 180-strong | Contemporary press snapshot; not a current headcount. |
| 13 July 2014, PerthNow profile | Almost 200 | Approximate contemporary press snapshot; not a current headcount. |
| Ten-year milestone, Monford-hosted CCF WA retrospective; exact publication date not confirmed | 600-strong | Company-hosted retrospective figure; not a current headcount. |
The two PerthNow reports are the 25 June award story and the 13 July founder profile. Workforce figures alone do not establish turnover, profitability or business performance.

What is—and is not—established about Monford today
The historical accounts document White’s arrival, the company’s 2010 launch, its reported early sectors and projects, and its 2014 award. They do not establish current leadership, headcount, revenue, offices or project portfolio. A Monford-related LinkedIn post reports that White received a Business News 40under40 award in 2023, but that post is company-related rather than confirmation from the award publisher: LinkedIn post.
Accordingly, “goes from strength to strength” is best understood as language describing the company’s trajectory in 2014 coverage, not a verified assessment of its current position. The documented story is of an immigrant founder who moved from construction roles in Western Australia to building a contractor that won a major state business award within four years.
