They are not a policy-wide promise: a vehicle must fit the symbol shown beside the specific coverage you are checking. The explanations below follow the reproduced ISO Business Auto Coverage Form CA 00 01 10 13; your issued policy, declarations, endorsements and applicable law control.
Where to find the symbols—and how to read them
Look in Item Two of the business auto declarations, commonly called the schedule of coverages and covered autos. Each coverage line has its own covered-auto symbol or symbols. The form states: “The symbols entered next to a coverage on the Declarations designate the only ‘autos’ that are covered ‘autos’.” In practical terms, a vehicle’s category must match the symbol beside the coverage you want to evaluate.

A symbol identifies eligible autos for that coverage; it does not by itself establish limits, deductibles, exclusions, who qualifies as an insured, or whether a particular loss will be paid. Check the corresponding policy wording and endorsements as well.

The following descriptions paraphrase the reproduced ISO CA 00 01 10 13 form, whose wording is copyrighted 2011. IRMI also describes the general function of covered-auto symbols: they identify the categories of autos to which the policy’s various coverages apply.
#1 Best Overall
| Symbol | Form description | Practical meaning in this form |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Any “Auto” | A broad category, but not a promise that every type of coverage applies to every vehicle. Read the coverage line and its policy terms. |
| 2 | Owned “Autos” Only | Includes autos acquired after the policy begins and, for liability, certain trailers attached to owned power units. |
| 3 | Owned Private Passenger “Autos” Only | Includes later-acquired owned private passenger autos. |
| 4 | Owned “Autos” Other Than Private Passenger “Autos” Only | Includes later-acquired owned autos that are not private passenger autos and, for liability, certain attached trailers. |
| 5 | Owned “Autos” Subject To No-fault | Applies to owned autos required to have no-fault benefits where licensed or principally garaged, including qualifying later acquisitions. |
| 6 | Owned “Autos” Subject To A Compulsory Uninsured Motorists Law | Applies to owned autos required by state law to carry non-rejectable uninsured-motorist coverage, including qualifying later acquisitions. |
| 7 | Specifically Described “Autos” | Applies to autos listed in Item Three for which a premium is shown, with a stated trailer provision for liability. |
| 8 | Hired “Autos” Only | Includes autos the named insured leases, hires, rents or borrows, subject to exclusions for autos obtained from employees, partners, LLC members or members of their households. |
| 9 | Non-owned “Autos” Only | Includes qualifying autos not owned, leased, hired, rented or borrowed that are used in connection with the business. The form also includes certain autos owned by employees, partners, members or household members while used in the business or personal affairs. |
| 19 | Mobile Equipment Subject To Compulsory Or Financial Responsibility Or Other Motor Vehicle Insurance Law Only | Applies to defined land vehicles that would otherwise qualify as mobile equipment if they were not subject to such a law. |
What symbol 7 means for scheduled vehicles
Symbol 7 is schedule-based. For a coverage marked with 7, compare the vehicles listed in Item Three with the premium shown for each. A vehicle absent from the applicable schedule may not meet the form’s specifically described-auto definition for that coverage.
Newly acquired autos under CA 00 01 10 13
Under the reproduced CA 00 01 10 13 form, the rule for newly acquired autos depends on the symbol. Autos acquired during the policy period that fit symbols 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 19 receive coverage for the remainder of the policy period under the form’s stated rule. Symbol 7 has narrower conditions: the insurer must already cover all autos the insured owns for that coverage, or the new auto must replace a previously covered auto; the insured must also notify the insurer within 30 days after acquisition that coverage is wanted.
Rank #2
That 30-day condition is specific to the cited form wording, not a universal deadline for every commercial auto policy. CAR’s comparison of CA 00 01 03 06 and CA 00 01 11 20 reproduces 30-day conditions and notes a 2020-edition provision for certain long-term autos leased or rented without a driver. Check the edition and endorsements on your own policy rather than assuming the reproduced 2013 wording applies.

Symbols 8 and 9: hired versus non-owned autos
The distinction is about how the business obtains or uses a vehicle. Symbol 8 addresses autos the named insured leases, hires, rents or borrows, with the form’s specified source exclusions. Symbol 9 addresses qualifying autos outside those categories that are used in connection with the business, including certain employee-owned vehicles.
Rank #3
For example, a vehicle rented by the business may fall within the hired-auto category, while an employee’s personal car used for a work errand may fall within the non-owned category. Whether a particular vehicle, driver, liability exposure or vehicle damage is covered depends on the relevant coverage line, insured status, policy wording and any applicable endorsements—not on the symbol alone.
A practical declarations check
- Find Item Two. Locate the schedule of coverages and covered autos on the declarations.
- Read each coverage line separately. Note the symbol beside the coverage you are evaluating; do not assume the same vehicle category applies to every line.
- For symbol 7, check Item Three. Compare the scheduled vehicles and premiums with the vehicles currently in the fleet.
- Review vehicle use. If the business rents or borrows vehicles, or employees use personal cars for work, check whether the relevant coverage lines show symbol 8, 9 or both.
- Confirm changes with the insurer. Ask how newly acquired vehicles are treated under the issued form and get written confirmation when requesting coverage.
When comparing two policies or arrangements, consider vehicle ownership and use, the coverage line bearing each symbol, whether vehicles are individually scheduled, and the applicable acquisition and notice terms. There is no universally correct symbol combination for every business.

Why the form edition matters
The descriptions above track the reproduced ISO Business Auto Coverage Form CA 00 01 10 13. Later editions and endorsements can change wording. The CAR comparison of CA 00 01 03 06 and CA 00 01 11 20 illustrates why the form number and edition should be checked rather than relying on a generic symbol chart. For a coverage decision, use the actual issued policy and ask the insurer or a licensed commercial insurance professional to review the declarations and relevant wording.
