In December 2024, a market report projected that the global data-center market would grow from about $300 billion in 2024 to nearly $500 billion by 2029, while Meta confirmed a planned $10 billion AI-focused campus in northeast Louisiana. Those figures describe that news cycle, not the project’s current announced scale: in July 2026, Meta said its Richland Parish development would expand to 5 GW of compute capacity and represent more than $50 billion in investment in the region. The developments share a defining constraint: demand is rising, but access to power can determine whether new capacity gets built.
What the December 2024 roundup reported
The December 6, 2024, Data Center Knowledge roundup brought together a market-growth projection and Meta’s Louisiana announcement, alongside separate developments involving nuclear power, Vietnam, and Malaysia. It was a snapshot of a fast-moving sector, not a single project forecast. Meta’s original announcement came on December 4, 2024.
The market report and the Louisiana campus were linked by the same pressure: companies were planning for more digital and AI infrastructure, while the electricity needed to operate it was becoming harder to secure. The rest of the roundup underscored the international reach of that build-out.
How strong was the growth forecast?
DLA Piper, working with TMT Finance, estimated the global data-center market at roughly $300 billion in 2024 and projected a value of about $483.15 billion by 2029—often rounded to nearly $500 billion. That implies a compound annual growth rate of about 10%. These are estimates and a forecast, not audited revenue or a guaranteed outcome. The report identifies AI, cloud migration, consumer data demand, and broader digital infrastructure needs as drivers.

The report drew on a third-quarter 2024 survey of 176 senior executives. Seventy percent expected data-center investment to increase over the following two years. That response indicates strong expectations among those surveyed; it does not establish that every market or company would grow at the same pace.
Forecasts also assume that demand can be converted into operating facilities. Capital, equipment, interconnection, permitting, and energy supply can delay or prevent projects. A projected market value is therefore not the same thing as capacity that is already financed, connected to the grid, and running.

Why power is the central constraint
In the DLA Piper survey, 98% of investors and operators expressed concern about the availability or reliability of power supplies; about half identified power as a principal investment barrier. The finding is a broad industry concern, not a measurement of conditions at Meta’s Louisiana site.

AI facilities can require far more electricity than conventional enterprise data centers. A site may have land, fiber, water access, and favorable local conditions yet still be difficult to develop if generation or transmission capacity is unavailable. Power access can shape site selection, project timing, financing, reliability planning, and operating costs. The distinction matters: demand for computing may be robust while the pace of construction remains limited by the infrastructure needed to serve it.
Meta’s own project illustrates the coordination involved. Its July 2026 announcement described an Entergy agreement supporting new generation, grid-scale batteries, nuclear uprates, and purchased power. Those elements describe a planned supply strategy; they do not, by themselves, establish that every cost or reliability risk has been eliminated. Meta says it pays the full costs associated with its energy, water, and related infrastructure. That is the company’s position, not an independent analysis of utility-rate effects.

Meta’s original Louisiana plan
Meta announced a data center in Richland Parish, northeast Louisiana, near Monroe. The company described it as an AI-optimized campus supporting its AI work and core products, and as its largest data center at the time. Its initial figures were:
- Investment: more than $10 billion, as announced in December 2024.
- Campus area: approximately 4 million square feet.
- Operational employment: more than 500 jobs in the initial projection.
- Construction workforce: more than 5,000 workers at peak, in the initial projection.
- Local infrastructure: more than $200 million in announced improvements.
- Schedule: construction expected to continue through approximately 2030.
These were company-announced plans and estimates, not completed results or guaranteed job counts. The initial figures are documented in Meta’s Louisiana announcement; the construction horizon was reported in the original roundup.

Meta later named the campus Hyperion. In October 2025, it announced a joint venture with funds managed by Blue Owl Capital to finance development and operations of the campus. In July 2026, Meta announced a much larger planned build-out. It said the expanded campus would reach 5 GW of compute capacity and that investment associated with the project in the Richland Parish region would exceed $50 billion.
Meta’s July 2026 figures also raised the planned workforce estimates: more than 7,500 people at peak construction and approximately 1,000 operational roles. Those categories should not be conflated. Peak construction employment is temporary and can fluctuate; operational roles describe the planned ongoing workforce. Neither figure is a count of jobs already filled.
The 5 GW figure is stated by Meta as compute capacity. It should not be casually restated as the campus’s electricity consumption or as 5 GW of power already available to the site. The investment figure is likewise a regional project-associated amount, not necessarily the construction cost of one building.
Meta said by July 2026 that Louisiana businesses had received more than $1.6 billion in contracts and that local infrastructure improvements would exceed $1 billion. It also announced $5 million for workforce scholarships at Louisiana Delta Community College. These company-reported figures indicate the scale of announced local activity, but are not an independent, comprehensive economic-impact assessment.

A project of this size can bring construction work, contracts for local firms, utility and road improvements, training, and tax revenue. Meta’s July 2026 community account said Richland Parish teachers received bonuses of up to $50,000 and described grants and other local support. These are meaningful reported benefits, but they should be assessed alongside the public costs and the duration and distribution of the benefits.
The available company announcements do not provide a neutral, complete cost-benefit analysis. In particular, the headline investment and job figures do not by themselves show the value of tax incentives, the net tax revenue after exemptions, how utility investment and costs are allocated, or the long-term local effects of water use and wastewater needs. Nor do they settle concerns about noise, traffic, construction disruption, land use, and environmental impacts. Meta’s statements about customer savings or paying project-related costs should be treated as company claims unless independently verified through utility records and other evidence.
For residents and local decision-makers, the useful questions are specific: What public incentives apply, and for how long? What permanent jobs are expected and how are they defined? Which costs fall to the company, the utility, taxpayers, or other ratepayers? What are the projected electricity and water demands, and what monitoring and disclosure will be available? Announced generation, storage, purchased power, or water-restoration measures are not interchangeable, and none alone resolves every local impact.

- Meta and nuclear energy: The roundup also reported Meta’s search for up to 4 GW of nuclear energy, a separate effort that reflected the industry’s interest in dependable power for expanding data-center loads.
- Vietnam: Nvidia was pursuing AI research and development activity in the country, while Viettel had plans for an Nvidia-powered data center.
- Malaysia: NTT Data proposed acquiring land in Johor Bahru for a six-building campus planned at 290 MW.
These were separate projects and announcements, not components of Meta’s Louisiana campus. The original roundup provides the contemporaneous context for those brief items.
How to read the numbers together
The December 2024 forecast and Meta’s later expansion tell a consistent story about ambition, but they measure different things. The market figure is a projected global value; Meta’s investment figure is company-reported regional investment associated with one expanded development; square footage and compute capacity describe physical and technical scale; and employment estimates distinguish temporary construction from ongoing operations.
For a personal-finance reader, the practical takeaway is not that a market projection guarantees returns for any particular company, nor that a large project automatically benefits every household nearby. The forecast is useful context for understanding why infrastructure investment is accelerating. The financial and local consequences depend on actual construction, electricity arrangements, public incentives, operating jobs, and how costs and benefits are distributed.
