Debt-oriented mutual funds recorded ₹1,01,977 crore in net outflows in September 2025, but the mutual-fund industry’s total net outflow was smaller: ₹43,146 crore. In its September note, the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) attributed debt redemptions to investors meeting advance-tax payments, a seasonal pattern. Equity, hybrid and other schemes had net inflows that partly offset the withdrawals. These figures describe September 2025, not current flows.
What happened to mutual-fund flows in September 2025?
AMFI reported net outflows of ₹43,146 crore across the Indian mutual-fund industry in September 2025. Debt-oriented schemes accounted for ₹1,01,977 crore in net outflows. Since other categories brought in money, debt outflows exceeded the industry-wide net figure.

| Scheme category | Net flows in September 2025 |
|---|---|
| Debt-oriented schemes | −₹1,01,977 crore |
| Equity schemes | ₹30,422 crore inflow |
| Hybrid schemes | ₹9,397 crore inflow |
| “Others” category | ₹19,057 crore inflow |
| All mutual-fund categories | −₹43,146 crore |
All figures are monthly net flows reported in AMFI’s September 2025 monthly note. Net flows are subscriptions minus redemptions for the stated period; they are not a count of investors or accounts.

AMFI’s explanation was seasonal demand for cash. The note says debt-fund outflows were “driven by outflows as investors liquidated their holdings to meet advance tax payments, a typical pattern.” This is the report’s explanation for the aggregate movement; it does not establish why any particular investor redeemed units.
#1 Best Overall
Debt schemes can be used to hold money for shorter-term needs, so redemptions around tax-payment dates can produce a large monthly movement. The September figures alone do not show that investors broadly lost confidence in debt funds or changed their long-term portfolio strategy.
Did investors leave mutual funds altogether?
The industry-wide net outflow indicates that redemptions exceeded subscriptions across all categories combined during September 2025. It does not mean every category had outflows. Equity schemes recorded ₹30,422 crore in net inflows, hybrid schemes ₹9,397 crore, and the “Others” category ₹19,057 crore. Overnight funds, a debt-fund category, also had ₹4,279 crore in inflows.
AMFI also reported record monthly systematic investment plan (SIP) inflows of ₹29,361 crore in September 2025. SIP contributions and aggregate scheme flows describe different activity: strong SIP inflows can coexist with net redemptions elsewhere, including lump-sum withdrawals or transactions in other categories.

Why did total mutual-fund assets rise while debt assets fell?
Flows and assets under management (AUM) measure different things. Flows track money invested and withdrawn over a period. AUM is the value of assets held at a point in time, and changes with both investor transactions and market-price movements.

| Measure | September 2025 figure | Change reported by AMFI |
|---|---|---|
| Debt-scheme AUM | ₹17.80 lakh crore | Down 4.9% month on month from ₹18.71 lakh crore |
| Total mutual-fund industry AUM | ₹75.61 lakh crore | Up 0.6% month on month and 12.7% year on year |
AMFI said mark-to-market gains across asset classes largely drove the increase in total industry AUM. That helps explain how total assets could rise even as debt-scheme AUM declined amid substantial redemptions. An AUM increase by itself does not prove that investors added money.
Do these figures show the latest debt-fund trend?
No. The September 2025 episode is historical. The latest SEBI industry-status figures identified here cover April 1 through August 31, 2026, not September 2026, and show different directions across debt categories. For that fiscal-year-to-date period, SEBI reported net inflows of ₹2,32,130.57 crore for liquid funds, ₹15,074.39 crore for overnight funds, ₹14,904.23 crore for ultra-short-term funds and ₹18,270.39 crore for money-market funds. Other debt categories had net outflows.

Those cumulative figures cannot establish whether debt funds as a whole had net outflows or inflows in September 2026. They cover a different period and report category-level totals. For a current assessment, check the latest month’s data rather than carrying the 2025 headline forward.
How to check mutual-fund flows by month and category
- Open the official data sources. Use AMFI’s monthly notes and scheme-wise data, and SEBI’s industry-status information. SEBI’s data catalogue points readers to AMFI monthly scheme-wise resource-mobilization data and AUM statistics.
- Match the reporting period. Compare the same month with the same month, or compare equivalent fiscal-year-to-date periods. Do not treat a five-month cumulative figure as a one-month result.
- Match the category. Check whether a figure refers to all mutual funds, debt schemes overall, or a specific category such as liquid, overnight or money-market funds.
- Keep flows separate from AUM. Read net subscriptions and redemptions alongside AUM, but do not use one as a substitute for the other. AUM can change because of market valuations as well as investor flows.
Aggregate flows can describe a category’s activity, but they are not a recommendation to buy or sell a fund. A personal decision depends on the investor’s time horizon, liquidity needs and risk tolerance.
