DayZ’s Standalone Sold More Than $5 Million in Its First Early-Access Day

DayZ’s 2013 Early Access launch reportedly topped 172,000 copies and $5.1 million in sales—but the figure was an estimate, not verified profit or net revenue.

On Dec. 16, 2013, DayZ standalone entered Steam Early Access. Contemporaneous reports said it sold more than 172,000 copies that day and estimated sales above $5.1 million. That figure describes reported sales—not audited revenue, profit, or money Bohemia Interactive necessarily received.

What the $5.1 million figure means

On Dec. 18, 2013, GameSpot reported that DayZ standalone had sold more than 172,000 copies on its first day of Early Access; GamesBeat reported estimated sales exceeding $5.1 million. The dollar figure is an estimate reported at the time, not a financial statement from Bohemia Interactive. GameSpot’s account and GamesBeat’s account support the launch-day milestones.

“Sales” should not be read as profit or net revenue. The reports do not establish how much the developer retained after platform fees, refunds, taxes, regional price differences, or other costs. The reviewed material provides no audited launch-day revenue statement or breakdown of those deductions.

How the launch-day result compares with later milestones

Measure Reported figure What it represents
First day of Early Access More than 172,000 copies; estimated sales above $5.1 million, reported by GameSpot and GamesBeat on Dec. 18, 2013 Launch-day units and a contemporaneous sales estimate, not net proceeds
First three weeks More than 875,000 copies, announced by Bohemia Interactive in 2014 A later cumulative unit milestone, not another first-day count; the announcement is available in Steam’s archived news feed

The three-week total covers a longer period, so it should not be added to the launch-day figure as though the numbers describe separate sales.

Early Access was not the full release

The more-than-$5-million report concerned DayZ standalone’s Dec. 16, 2013 Early Access launch on Steam. Steam dates the full release to Dec. 13, 2018. Bohemia Interactive identifies DayZ as a multiplayer survival sandbox it developed and published. Steam’s DayZ listing provides the current product and release information.

Current store prices and editions do not establish what buyers paid in 2013, and they cannot be used to independently recalculate the launch estimate. The historical reports do not provide a regional sales or pricing breakdown.
