Angie Craig for the top Democratic role on the House Agriculture Committee on Dec. 17, 2024, after Georgia Rep. David Scott withdrew his bid the day before. The change was a caucus leadership decision for the next Congress—not a removal of Scott from the committee by a public vote. Scott died on April 22, 2026, according to the House Historian.
Who replaced David Scott on House Agriculture?
Angie Craig was selected as the committee’s top Democrat on Dec. 17, 2024. The Georgia Recorder reported that Scott had dropped his bid to return as ranking member on Dec. 16. The selection applied to the next Congress and followed the Democratic Caucus’s internal leadership process.
What post did Scott hold, and how was it different from chair?
Committee chair and ranking member are different roles. The chair leads the committee when the party controls the House; the ranking member is the leading member of the minority party on that committee. The House Historian’s biography records Scott as chair of Agriculture in the 117th Congress. He was the committee’s ranking Democrat in the 118th Congress, before the December 2024 transition. Craig was selected for the top Democratic role in the subsequent Congress.
Scott had represented Georgia in the House from Jan. 3, 2003, until his death on April 22, 2026, the House Historian records. The April 22, 2026 Congressional Record memorialized him and noted that he was the first African American to chair the Agriculture Committee.

Why did Scott lose the leadership bid?
The documented sequence is that Scott withdrew his bid and Democrats then selected Craig. The Georgia Recorder cited health concerns that had kept Scott from some committee meetings, while also reporting on his continued legislative activity, including recent work on a farm bill extension. Those details provide context; the available reporting does not establish that health concerns caused the caucus’s decision or identify a definitive reason for the outcome.

The Agriculture decision was part of a wider post-election reshuffle reported by the Georgia Recorder. Democrats also selected Gerry Connolly for the top role on Oversight and Accountability and Jared Huffman for Natural Resources. These were contemporaneous choices for the next Congress, not changes to Scott’s earlier chairmanship.
